Massive explosions rocked the Sunoco refinery in the Marcus Hook area tonight, sending flames shooting into the night and sounding alarms in three states.
The actual explosions were in Delaware but close to the Pennsylvania border. Some officials were reporting that the chemicals in the explosion could waft into South Jersey. The explosions were first heard shortly after 10 p.m.
The flames could be seen as far as 10 miles away at the Philadelphia airport.
Safety officials were considering widespread evacuations and police were blocking off roads around the refineries, one of the largest on the East Coast, according TV reports.
Sunoco officials did not have official information on the cause. A union official said he did not know if anyone was hurt but that the refinery was staffed.
BTTT
Prayers up for the injured.
Tomorrow, your local gasoline price will jump by at least $.10 because of this.
Cheers!
Boy, I remember the refinery fires around 1975 or so... seemed like they burned for months.
It’s probably not terrorism, because if it was, there would have been a very public statement, before the first responders arrived, that terrorism had been ruled out.
right wing terrorists
I’ve been praying for the past couple hours that there are no dead or injured. The reports I’m reading so far say there are no reports of injuries. I pray it stays that way.
I wonder if they will rebuild.
I remeber that there seems to have been one big fire a year though the 70’s and 80’s and the refineries were enver rebuilt. Reduced capacity increased the cost to consumers.
From what I’m reading, the damaged area seems to be a small part of the refinery. It’s on the Delaware River, partway in DE, and partway in PA. 39°48.5’N 75°26’W. The damaged area is reported to be contained in Delaware, which looks to me like a very small part of the overall plant.
I’ll be curious to see if they rebuild it. If they don’t, I wonder if it will be noticeable.

Did the explosion sound the alarms, or did it set off the alarms, Bob?
We’ve got a Sunoco refinery in Tulsa, too. For a minute there I thought it was here, but I would have heard it — if it was... :-)
You’d have probably felt it too. I felt this one in NJ.
Mayor Wilson Goode’s come out of retirement?!?
LOL. I don’t think so. If it had been him, the first words of every discussion about the explosion would have been a clear statement that they had ruled out any possible link to terrorism. It’s the next day, and I still haven’t heard anyone deny it was terrorism, so I guess it probably wasn’t.
