Motorcycle Awareness Month
Office of the Governor of the State of Alaska ^ | 04-20-09 | Gov. Sarah Palin

Posted on 05/11/2009 12:45:20 PM PDT by euram

WHEREAS, Alaska has more registered motorcycles per capita than any other state, yet motorcycles are still the minority users of the Alaska road system; and

WHEREAS, in 80-90 percent of all accidents involving a motorcycle, it is the other motorist’s fault. Motorcyclists everywhere face a constant threat to personal safety caused by a lack of alertness of the driving public. It is imperative all motorists operate with caution near motorcyclists; and

WHEREAS, Alaska Bikers Advocating Training and Education (ABATE) is a nonprofit organization of motorcycle riders and non-riders dedicated to both education and preservation of freedom of the road. ABATE believes that with training we can all become more proficient motorists. Fewer risks for motorcyclists will be the result of well-educated drivers; and

WHEREAS, the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a member of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and uses its testing procedures to license Alaska’s motorcycle riders; and

WHEREAS, DMV recognizes ABATE’s MSF training and rider education curriculum. In 2002, ABATE was approved by the Alaska DMV to administer regular DMV motorcyclist endorsement testing. MSF training through ABATE will provide the rider with a motorcyclist endorsement without any further testing from the DMV upon the rider’s successful completion of the course;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the state of Alaska, do hereby proclaim May 2009 as:

Motorcycle Awareness Month

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaska motorists to make themselves more aware of what is going on around them, so our highways can be safer for all who use them.

Lay the bike down and take your chances is my moto!
Of course I haven’t ridden in a few years but when I did I rode a Harley, 74 CI bored out to 80, 1955 frame, 1937 transmission, hand shift, foot clutch(Known as a suicide clutch), stripped of all unnecessary equipment. Rode a Suzuki 250 CC for while in enduros and such. Loved it but never got over riding a road bike. If I could actually afford one, I would buy a brand new Harley tomorrow.

You know, his son looks almost exactly as I thought while reading that book.

I figured he was riding a BSA or Triumph for some reason. Probably my own bias.

The best tip I learned was that you should assume you’re invisible.

The other tip is ride like every car on the road is trying to kill you....

Harleys are for tools, not motorcycle riders. They are like a driving an old fashioned farting sofa. They look and sound stupid

Guess the wife wont let you own one, or you work for 7/11 and cant afford one to bad.Varoooom.

I think my Father, who is 67, who has been going to Sturgis for a good 40 years straight now. Respectfully disagrees. I do too, although not as respectfully. Get off your high horse.

Not a lot of info regarding bike week activities May 8-17, 2009. But what is out there indicates things are slower than in the past......... who knows at this point.

Got a ‘project’ bike in the shed, for over decade. I like it, just don’t trust`the rest of what’s on the road.

That is what I want. Multifuel. I have seen reports that the diesel milage is around 100 per gal, at $2.10 a gallon that's only TWO CENTS A MILE. Note, I am an olive drab kinda guy.

Good try, but a Honda gold wing is also made in the USA, and has a similar foreign parts content. Not that i ride a goldwing (There's a REAL 2-wheel sofa for you!), but that's a pretty lame attempt.

The GL1800 (An 06 ABS is my current main ride) is more like a race bike on steroids than a road sofa - the fat lady can dance. The 1500 was a little more like a road sofa, but not up the level of road sofaness that a Harley is.
