GOP Suffers Blow as Ridge Passes on Race (ROFL)

The Republican Party suffered a major blow on Thursday when Tom Ridge, the former Pennsylvania governor and Secretary of Homeland Security, announced that he will not run for the U.S. Senate in 2010.

“After careful consideration and many conversations with friends and family and the leadership of my party, I have decided not to seek the Republican nomination for Senate," said Ridge in a written statement.

Ridge's decision not to run is a boon to Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa. The longtime moderate Republican senator switched parties on April 28 to avoid a tough GOP primary challenge from former Rep. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., a one-time head of the anti-tax Club for Growth who has pilloried Specter for supporting the borrowing and spending contained in President Obama's stimulus package.

But I thought he would win with 135% of the vote.

Toomey has no shot in the general.

PA is a leftwing state. Obama, the radical marxist, won by 10 points - against a moderate Repub.

I wonder if this will give the rats a false sense of security and not oppose Specter in the primaries.

How do you know? We could have found out in 2004 but Specter barely beat him by 2%.

PA is a leftwing state. Obama, the radical marxist, won by 10 points - against a moderate Repub.

Uh, that's exactly why Obama won because the nominee was liberal too. So Toomey will win if he goes further left than McCain?

The ABC blog report is careful not to quote any Republicans who think this is a major blow to the party. Instead “National Republican strategists” are cited. Who the H are national republican strategists? McCain’s handlers? The editorial board at the NYT? Who? The national media wants a food fight in the GOP primary in PA in order to discredit the GOP. Sadly for them they didn’t get one in Ridge opposing Toomey. They would love nothing more than for conservatives to be defeated by a lukewarm moderate.

Toomey wont have much of a chance if the friggin cowardly Republican’s refuse to back him.

Come on Spectre just lost his claim to seniority, he is a proven backstabber and Toomey cant beat him. ? Sure he can beat him, he scared the old butthead out of being a republican just by saying he was running.

It appears that Republicans dont like Conservatives and more than Democrats do, If that is the case its time for me to call my election board and get me a new party.

There are those of us who actually live in PA who believe Pat Toomey can win.

And Specter doesn’t have a slam dunk on getting the D nomination either. Rep. Sestak will be running against him (I know very little about Sestak, but he is pi$$ing off Rendell...who was told to give the D primary to Snarlin’ Arlen...so, in that case, as Hillary Democrat...he has my vote).

If the PA Republican Party won’t support Toomey...his ca$h will come from outside the state.

I don’t get to listen to a lot of talk radio...but when the polling showed that Toomey could win against Specter in the R primary, both Rush and Hannity were all over it (and I heard their support/glee in the brief amounts of listening I do)...so I think nationally, a few well placed “sound bytes” on conservative talk radio could bring some heavy coin to Mr. Toomey’s warchest.

Bill Russell...who tried to unseat John Murtha...had a lot of out of state donors (during a Presidential election). Toomey, I believe will get help as well.

Don’t laugh. We have a few Colin Powell types right here on Free Republic who have drunk deeply from the media Kool Aid. I’m sure they all raced for the Midol when they heard the news about Ridge.
