Leahy Raises Questions Over Specter Subcommittee Chairmanship
Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on Thursday appeared to throw a little cold water on the Democratic leaderships plan to give recent party-switcher Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) a plum subcommittee chairmanship.
Though Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced earlier in the day that he would relinquish the Crime and Drugs subpanel and take over a reconstituted Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law, Leahy told reporters, Nothings been worked out.
Leahy indicated that he does not know how he will fund the new subcommittee, which existed in the 110th Congress but was disbanded this year. Maybe the leader has some money, Leahy said referring to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
In a statement, Leahy added: I value the contributions of all members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, including the longstanding service of Senator Specter. I am consulting with Senator [Jeff] Sessions, our Republican Ranking Member, in light of our recently revised Committee membership to consider any necessary adjustments to Judiciary Committee subcommittees. I hope to have a decision by early next week.
Specter, however, said he talked to Leahy Thursday morning and feels secure that he will chair the subcommittee. He plans to hold his first hearing on imposing tougher penalties, such as jail time, on individuals convicted of Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
So Reid yanks him from all his seniority spots and gives him a sub-committee that Leahy says isn’t even funded.
LOL! This just keeps getting better and better...
Welcome to political hell, Arlen. Maybe the Whigs have some room for you.
You would think that a 29 year veteran of the Senate would be smart enough to know how that snake pit works, and not get himself screwed like this (not that I care - I like seeing him get it in the shorts). You seriously have to wonder if Specter’s not getting senile, or at least losing some of his political acuity.
ROFLMAO!!!!
These people get more despicable by the day.
Arlen, lie down with dogs and you will wake up with fleas.
I have no sympathy for this ‘rat.
Yes they are, but Specter can still vote any d*mn way he wants too. Just because he has a (D) after his name doesn’t mean he won’t stick a knife into Reid’s back when he needs him most.
Revenge is a dish best served cold, and I think Specter is pretty p*ssed right about now.
This reminds me of the old joke about "we've already established what you are now we're just haggling over the price." Specter sees himself as a $1000 an hour escort, the dems see him as a crack whore. And the dems are calling it right.
He probably listened to some of Vice President Joe Blooper’s psycho-babble, and believed it!
He is senile..has been for at least 10 years.
You’d think so but that seems not to be the case. The voters of PA sure are stupid...not only do they continually elect a loser but he makes them a laughing stock. The problems in DC can be directly traced back to the electorate.
Good analysis.
LMFAO!!!!!! Favorite show!
All of this just proves what we know to be fact. Most long term politicians in Congress (or even the newer ones) aren’t there for the people. They are there to play games, give and receive favors and money, establish some status to build their egos. They fight each other because of “feelings” not the essence of a proposal, bill, or law. They bear grudges and plot. There is nothing honorable about the jobs any of them are doing anymore.
Specter is the Crack Spider in this scientific research study:

So true, the perfect example is the empty suit figurehead TOTUS now in office.
"Uh, Arlen we're gonna need to move your desk downstairs into Storage B. Uh, we have some new people coming in and we need all the space we can get. And if you could could go ahead and get a can of pesticide and take care of the roach problem we've been having that would be great."
