Attorneys for a Minneapolis man held in solitary confinement on terror charges for more than five years are asking he be released while he awaits trial, saying Mohammed Warsame's pretrial incarceration has gone on so long it has become punitive.

After U.S. District Court Judge John Tunheim said he would take the request under advisement, Warsame stood up in court and said, "This is unfair, sir. I've been here a long time."

Warsame, a Canadian of Somali descent, is charged with conspiracy to provide material support and resources to al-Qaida and with one count of providing such support. He's also charged with three counts of lying to the FBI.

Wouldn’t it be something if each of these terrorists who just might get released into our society “accidentally” got picked off?

Golly, one at a time . . .

Let's see now...he's released from prison...sneaks over the border to Canada....hops on a flight to Karachi just as bold as can be (there's not a country on earth today that would detain him,let alone return him to the US)....and within 72 hours of release he's in Afghanistan fighting the infidels along side his fellow 9th Century knuckledragging pig-fornicating friends.

See the aliases of this guy.

Warsame was arrested in Dec 2003. His wife's name is, unfortunately for her, Fartun Farah.

I don't know if there is any relation besides the nationality [Somali] and the name [Farah] but a cabdriver was murdered a few months later who went by the name Hassan Farah; he had shortly after 9/11 been picked up by the feds investigating a barakat money exchange where he also was employed. It was linked to al Qaeda, but he was released without charge.

FEBRUARY 3, 2004 Tuesday : (USA : WA : FUNERAL OF SLAIN SOMALI CABDRIVER HASSAN FARAH - SEE BARAKAT WIRE TRANSFER CASE) COVINGTON -- Amid a sea of Yellow Cabs, the friends and co-workers of Hassan Farah said goodbye yesterday at a Muslim cemetery on a bitterly cold afternoon. More than 200 people of different ethnicities, most of them immigrants and half of them cab drivers, filled two parking lots and lined 256th Street Southeast for a quarter-mile. - "Friends, co-workers mourn slain cabbie ; Somali community shocked; victim described as a 'peaceful person' ," By JOHN IWASAKI , SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER, Tuesday, February 3, 2004, http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/159139_cabbiefuneral03.html
**********
Mourners gather at the Dar-o-Rahma cemetery east of Kent for the funeral of slain taxi driver Hassan Farah. Farah -- a husband, father of three preschoolers, Somali community volunteer, part-time cab driver and full-time assistant to bilingual students -- quietly influenced his fellow East African immigrants.
Farah was in the news shortly after the Sept. 11 terror attacks when federal agents raided the Rainier Valley offices of Barakat Wire Transfer, which was housed in a small, Somali-run grocery store and used by local Somali immigrants to send money home to Africa. Agents took everything from business records and furniture to cereal and toilet paper. Agents believed that Barakat and similar wire transfer services in other cities might have been involved in laundering money for the al-Qaida terrorist network. Farah was briefly detained, questioned and released. No charges were filed.
Mohammed Ali, a longtime friend of Farah, said Farah only worked as a clerk at Barakat.
But that contact with federal agents apparently resulted in Farah being kept under scrutiny ever since. When police ran his name through the FBI's National Crime Information Center computer index, it came back under a terrorism-related database. ---?

In early December of last year [2003] , FBI agents confronted Warsame and arrested him as a material witness against al Qaeda. ...Warsame's arrest was supposed to be secret. But within days stories appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune about the case — dashing the government's hopes of gaining greater insight into al Qaeda activities against the United States. Federal officials were furious about the apparent leak, and the Justice Department has launched an investigation to determine how the information about Warsame's arrest leaked to the media.
Senior officials told ABCNEWS they are very concerned about the implications of the leak.
Government agents believe that Warsame, a 30-year-old Canadian citizen, was a potentially dangerous al Qaeda agent, sent to live quietly in downtown Minneapolis.
Law enforcement officials suspect Warsame has ties to accused Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and Fazul Mohammed, suspected of being a key planner of the 1998 attacks on U.S. embassies in Africa. Authorities believe Fazul Mohammed is still on the run.
...The FBI said Warsame told agents he once sat next to bin Laden at a meal, and found the al Qaeda leader to be "inspirational." The affidavit said that "he [Warsame] was instructed by al Qaeda to return to North America and that al Qaeda paid the costs of his return." The group provided Warsame with $1,700 in travel money.

“Attorneys for alleged terror supporter want to talk to al-Qaeda members”
by Elizabeth Stawicki, Minnesota Public Radio
May 5, 2009

St. Paul, Minn. —

SNIPPET: “The defendant, Mohamed Warsame, is a Canadian citizen of Somali descent who lived in Minneapolis in 2002.

The federal government charged Warsame with providing material support to al-Qaeda after he left Canada to attend two terrorist training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

SNIPPET: “Warsame’s attorneys want to talk to some-al Qaeda members, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind behind the 9-11 attacks, because they were unable to identify Warsame by photo or name.

The defense will also ask for Warsame’s conditional release.”
