BAGHDAD – Widespread violence is down across Baghdad, but not for one minority group.
Iraq’s gay population is being targeted by militia groups in a wave of killings that has claimed the lives of up to 25 young men and boys in the past month.
"They know I am gay. I don’t know if I am going to be killed, this is up to God," said Moyad, a 38-year-old Baghdad resident who would not give his last name out of fear for his safety.
Visibly frightened, he said that he has many friends who have been sadistically tortured, some even murdered.
"They are sticking glue up their anuses; some hospitals refuse to treat them. Is it a war waged against homosexuals?" he asked.
International outrage
Most of the attacks have happened in Baghdad’s Shia neighborhoods, and many believe that religious leaders have used Friday sermons in Sadr City as a platform to incite hatred and violence toward homosexuals. The bodies of three gay men were reported to have been found in Sadr City in April with pieces of paper bearing the word for "pervert" attached to them.

There was a news item that the government is going to pay for a study of alcohol consumption in gay bars in Argentina. That’s the thing to do—send the Iraqi gays to Buenos Aires where they can learn to get drunk in gay bars. Maybe they’ll forget about wanting asylum in the US.

I’m sorry, but there is no excuse for this kind of thing. This is disgusting. My heart goes out to these people. I would get the hell out of there too. No one, I REPEAT NO ONE should be brutalized and killed for being gay. I’m sure everyone on FreeRepublic would agree with that. In fact this story only confirm how good our country is. Gay people in the US are up in arms because they don’t like the concept of one man/one woman marriage. They should put themselves in the places of the gay men and women in Iraq and count their blessings they live in the USA.

In my opinion, you have absolutely no need to be apologizing for saying the right thing. Well done.
Mocking victims of extreme injustice, killing and brutality is not a sport that real conservatives indulge in, no matter who the victims are.
It gives the false impression that conservatives would support that brutality in this society.
If we did, it would not be a society based on conservative principals.

I agree. I am oppossed to the recent hate crime bill and I oppose gay marriage. But that does not mean I believe homosexuals should be subject to such legal brutality. There is I hope a world of difference between believing that what someone does is a sin and sanctioning their being killed.
