Biden (in Houston for DNC fundraiser) says he helped persuade Specter to switch
Houston Chronicle ^ | April 28, 2009, 9:26PM | ALAN BERNSTEIN

...Biden was in town for a Democratic National Committee fundraising reception at the River Oaks home of lawyer Neal Manne — who served as Specter’s chief of staff in Washington in the 1980s...

The vice president said that, as a senator from Delaware, he was Specter’s best friend in the Senate for 33 years, and that he and Manne “have been trying to remind Arlen that he is really Democrat.”

“I have been working on that in earnest for the past four years and double time for the past 100 days (as vice president),” Biden added.

“It seems only appropriate,” Biden told Manne in front of a crowd of about 30 donors and supporters, “that I am at your home on the day that Arlen Specter … came back home as a Democrat...”

“Neal steeled (Specter’s) resolve on the Bork nomination … and we were able to keep Bork off the court,” the vice president said.

...Some donors paid $10,000 per couple to mingle with the vice president. Mayor Bill White stopped by. Lawyers Arthur Schechter, Ron Franklin, John Eddie Williams, Fred Hagans and Lee Godfrey were present, as well as investor Martin McVey .

...“I’m in the energy capital of the country, (but) for all the oil we could find … does anybody think we’re going to be able to sustain our place in the world if, in fact, we don’t have a radical change over the next 10 years in what we consume, how we consume it and what it costs?” he asked. “I don’t think so. The president doesn’t think so.”

Several donors at the reception were Pakistani-Americans, and Biden joked that he had to answer questions or “there’ll be a Pakistani revolution...”

Well certainly, few people are more persuasive than the silver tongued Joe Biden.

(And yes, for those in West Medford, I’m being sarcastic.)

I love these Biden posts. They make me realize how truly fortunate we are to have a man of this caliber only 1 heartbeat away from the Presidency.

that would be /sarc

It’s about POWER. To them, it’s all just a GAME.
They don’t care about America.

What a sad sight it is watching a grown man constantly puffing himself. This is the best this country could come up with as a VP? How truly sad.

What's sadder is think back to 1988. Gore, Biden, Dukakis, Little Dick Gephardt, Jesse Jackson, Paul Simon, Gary Hart and Bruce Babbitt all were in the running for the POTUS. And two of them got into the VP office.

They needed an "Obama" who came into office with a clean slate.

While the city’s streets were flooded yesterday, requiring emergency assistance from flash flooding (and at least one woman drown leaving her car), around 50 police officers were put on a security detail blocking off Houston’s already congested streets so that he could pick up ~$300,000 in River Oaks for the DNC.

That must have been some conversation — to be persuaded by the man formerly known as the dumbest guy in the Senate.
