According to a CBS News article on April 22, President Obamas flights on Earth Day two on Air Force One and four on Marine One consumed about 9,000 gallons of fuel. My first reaction to this news was that it was much ado about nothing, a scoop about as significant as the price tag on Sarah Palins campaign attire. But upon reflection, I realized these 9,000 gallons reflect a hypocrisy, endemic to globetrotting politicians and celebrities fighting climate change, more serious than what we generally expect from our public figures.
What is 9,000 gallons of fuel? This quantity is so far outside the average persons experience that it is about as inaccessible as the astronomical monetary figures thrust upon us by TARP, the stimulus package, and the debt that will accrue from Obamas budget. To help evaluate the significance of these 9,000 gallons of fuel, I crunched a few numbers:

Did the presidents Earth Day speech really do so much to fight climate change that it was worth those 9,000 gallons?
Now, back to the 9,000 gallons: it appears that in one day the presidents Earth Day travel expended 50% more fuel than I have used in ten years of driving my conscience-shocking, air-polluting SUVwhich is about the same amount of fuel fourteen SUV drivers use in an entire year.
President Puff Daddy likes his jet and his entourage.
That’s what ya get when ya elect a rapper star.
They want us to live in caves.
what about the fuel and taxpayer money he spent to order Pizza from St.Louis, or 100 dollar per pound beef from Japan, flown in specially for his Presidential celebration?
Or Pelosi, who flies her 50 passenger jet coast to coast several times a week to sleep in her bed in San Francisco, at the tax payers expense?
Where is the outrage in that? Why was this not brought up to embarrass him? He would not hesitate to shame and denigrate Bush for a second, on far more trivial issues.
Global warming activists want to live like “The Jetsons”, while forcing you to live like “The Flintstones”.

HA! Good one! That would make a great ‘tagline’. ;-)
“9000 gallons”
Depends on what he flew and where he flew. If he took one of the 747’s, he burned approximately 3700 gals/hr. Multiply that time the flight time, and you’ve got the total fuel.
Without knowing the scenarios, it is difficult to know whether the 9000 gal figure is accurate. Suffice to say, if much flying was done at all, 9,000 gals might be low.
If he took one of 757’s, it would be less. And with one of the 737’s it would be even less. The point isn’t how much he burned, it’s how impressive a 747 is when the news cameras are on. Operationally, in domestic operations, it doesn’t matter much whether you’re using the Gulfstream, or the 747. They both get you there just as fast. If you’re hauling a bunch of folks, then the larger aircraft would obviously be more useful.
Yes: While he sits in the Oval ofice with the thermostat on 76 and I sit at home with it on 65.
Don’t do as I do, do as I say do.
Thats the Obama -Gore motto.
But hey!! They are royalty and rich and we are just peons, and sruggling to pay our taxes and keep them in the style to which they have become accustomed..
