Mexico canceled school nationwide Monday and warned the death toll from a swine flu epidemic believed to have killed 149 people would keep rising before it can be contained. Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said 20 of the deaths have been confirmed to be from swine flu and the government was awaiting results on the others.

"We are the most critical moment of the epidemic. The number of cases will keep rising so we have to reinforce preventive measures," Cordova said at a news conference that was briefly shaken by an earthquake centered in southern Mexico.

It’s strange that Mexico is the inception nation for a flu virus.

Joy.

We don't have a secure border in a time of war. I doubt we are gonna get one now.

Naturally we need copious amounts of infected foreign nationals flooding our country.

I keep thinking it’s only some sort of a diversion, but I did go out and stock up on a few things, just in case.

But I like that they are taking some action by closing all the schools.

Meanwhile our government is finally saying they will issue a travel advisory, while they claim to be engaged in “passive surveilance” at the border.

Even though we have millions of illegals crossing into the U.S., the leftist and media are now suggesting it's only being brought in from returning American tourist.

lol...

It would be interesting to know the breakdown on the people who have come down with the swine flu in the U.S. I would think it was across the board with regard to heredity.

Mexico says the World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert for swine flu by one level, two steps short of declaring a full-blown pandemic

Mexico health department spokesman Carlos Olmos confirms the move.

WHO says the phase 4 alert means sustained human to human transmission causing outbreaks in at least one country. It signals a significant increase in the risk of a global epidemic, but doesn’t mean a pandemic is inevitable.

As I mentioned to another FReeper a few minutes ago, about five years ago there was a year when half the influenze supply didn’t not come down the pike. A batch failed, and the supply was real short that year. Somehow we made it through that year without massive deaths.

When all is said and done, I expect to see is a normal instance of the populace contracting influenza, the mortality to remain quite low.

We’ll see in the next few days, as the outcomes become evident for the first persons infected. I certainly hope my take on it pans out.

Um yeah, sure there is, there is about 10 really big doors, with traffic backed up a half mile at all of them, all crossing into the U.S. as I type.

Wouldn’t do a bit of good in this era of international air travel and even then by the time things like this are detected potentially exposed people have already gone from Mexico to dozens of countries.

Since when is it mandatory that people must travel? Can we not survive without plane loads of people that want to go to Disneyland? God forbid people in business would have to use telephones.

My point is, profits are more important than anything. Our government and mega businesses have proven that over and over.

Ya got 10 Mexican entry points jammed with cars entering the U.S. Mexico as we speak. This goes on 24/7.

You think this government cares about that?

The problem is, I think our officials are basically saying nobody here is seriously ill yet, so it must just be Mexico.

Maybe true, but it could get worse. It could be substandard health clinics down south is why they are dying and we aren’t. But, it may be not. Why wait?

It would if you ground all flights as well.

However, by this point it has already left Mexico and gone across the world. Still, closing it down would be better to keep it from spreading even faster and getting worse.....at least now it could potentially be semi-contained and treatable, but if we keep things open, it could conceivably get out of control.

Sure thing. Stop 100% of the trade in food and goods going both ways. That would kill the Mexican economy, and gravely damage the US agricultural economy. This all started because of corrupt and inept Mexican officials. Now you want to kill agriculture and trade between the US and Mexico? Brilliant.
