Evidently the CDC under the Obama reign of terror doesn't realize the skin is the largest organ in the body. A virus can enter any pore.

The nasal passages just give it easier access to the body, unless of course, your a Mexican at a tea bag party with Barney Frank.

Anything that causes a barrier between you, the potential host, and the person with the illness is going to be effective to some extent. The other way the mask works is that if you touch an object that has the virus, you are less likely to then directly touch your mouth, nose, etc., which often provides easy entry.

There is a lot of wisdom in wearing a mask. Why people on here don’t understand it only shows me they have not done some basic study on infectious disease.

This might work, but I doubt that there are enough to go around.

Does the virus get spread as an isolated organism, or is it carried by water droplets (such as from a sneeze)?

Since much of the transmission is aerosolized droplets, the mask would stop the droplets. However, I think you would have to have your eyes covered, too, as that is a point of infection, as is touching your face.
