The number of deaths linked to the swine flu outbreak in Mexico has risen to 81, the country's government has announced.

This is likely the number which has been lab confirmed to be the new flu, and that is probably far lower than the actual number.

It takes a while to get lab confirmation, and I’m guessing that by now there’s quite a backlog.

If this swine flu is an “optimal” flu, it could kill 100,000-200,000 Americans. But typically, 30,000-50,000 Americans die of ordinary flu every year.

However, H5N1 Avian flu holds the prospect of killing 30,000,000 Americans. It is a whole ‘nother ballgame.
