Readers in Mexico have been emailing the BBC describing the sense of fear gripping the country as a result of a flu virus outbreak, which has so far claimed up to 60 lives.
The World Health Organization says the virus has the potential to become a pandemic.
Read a selection of BBC readers' comments below.
I work as a resident doctor in one of the biggest hospitals in Mexico City and sadly, the situation is far from "under control". As a doctor, I realise that the media does not report the truth. Authorities distributed vaccines among all the medical personnel with no results, because two of my partners who worked in this hospital (interns) were killed by this new virus in less than six days even though they were vaccinated as all of us were. The official number of deaths is 20, nevertheless, the true number of victims are more than 200. I understand that we must avoid to panic, but telling the truth it might be better now to prevent and avoid more deaths.

How many of these deathly sick people will illegally come to the US and infect us - along with the leprosy, tuberculosis, etc?
Do ya think it may be in our best interest to enforce immigration laws? The regs that require one to be free of communicable diseases maybe could have minimized this.
Ya think?
What in the HELL are elected officials thinking?
Healine on Drudge. This is starting to get worrisome.
TB has been rampant in some US jails over the last 15 years. I wonder where that came from.
true, this is more likely to be spread by a tourist or business traveler flying in. An illegal trying to sneak in would succumb before he ever got to the border.
Eh? Who’s worried about being overrun with Mexicans? You I suppose.
Me, I’m worried about diseases like tuberculosis for example that would be minimized by enforcing existing immigration law. You know, the part about carrying infectious diseases disqualifying entry?

Response: Your question assumes elected officials think. Even deeper your question assumes they are capable of thought. One glance clearly indicates the contrary.
Actually the term is “Mexican Flew.” It’s past tense for “Spanish Fly.”
Steele High outside San Antonio has shut down, and a caucasian TX family is under indefinite quarantine after their son comes down with the Flu.
Perhaps - but just like the business traveler or tourist, the people with whom contact is made may become new carriers - hence the problem.
Just about all the current cases of TB are a result of resistant strains developed in people who didn't take all their medicine.
That must be one of the side effects of the virus.
Healthier, smarter people then rise up and initiate an effective quarantine.
That's actually one of the good things about this sort of thing ~ the stupid politicians pass on quickly.
All clear here in Los Angeles. :)
Alot of major manufacturing of world-wide companies originate in Mexico. My company is one. Go to a third world country, inherit third world problems. My bosses will order me to go down this year probably. If its a full blown pandemic I get to decide between a job or a life. I pick life.
