In March 2008, Kwame Kilpatrick was charged with eight felonies, including perjury and obstruction of justice. In August, he violated his bail agreement and was thrown in jail. His actions were deplorable for anybody, but Kilpatrick was no Average Joe--he was the mayor of Detroit.
Unfortunately for the Motor City, Kilpatrick, 38, is just one ripple in the area's sea of crime. Detroit is the worst offender on our list of America's most dangerous cities, thanks to a staggering rate of 1,220 violent crimes committed per 100,000 people.
"Detroit has, historically, been one of the more violent cities in the U.S.," says Megan Wolfram, an analyst at iJet Intelligent Risk Systems, a Maryland-based risk-assessment firm. "They have a number of local crime syndicates there--a number of small gangs who tend to compete over territory."
Detroit was followed closely on the list by the greater Memphis, Tenn., and Miami, Fla., metropolitan areas. Those three were the only large cities in America with more than 950 violent crimes committed per 100,000 people

I was shocked to learn it was Detroit...absolutley shocked.
Kwame Kilpatrick....is he of the Dublin Kilpatricks, or the Donegal Kilpatricks?
Disproportionately large number of democrats in the population.
Disproportionately large number of democrats in the population.
That is only half the problem my friend and we all know it.
I was just thinking about taking a weekend there for the Henry Ford and Greenfield? Museum and a Tigers game........
Strange timing....
“”What causes these particular cities to have so much violent crime?””
I suspect a direct correlation between the percentage that voted for hopey-change now becoming rope ‘n chains.
Also, check the demographics.
Are you referring to the fact my hubby just mentioned at dinner? The largest muslim population in the US?
How long before the entire U.S. seriously becomes “one big Detroit”, possibly forever?
Aren’t there Kilpatricks in County Cork? Or was it County Mayo? I get confused...........
More of that there right wing extremism that we are all so used to./s
I hear that Detroit never really recovered after the ‘67 riots. And that vast areas of the city look like a war zone.
I thought they tried some urban renewal ideas, such as urban homesteading, but didn’t get many people to move back into inner city Detroit.
Nah, he’s playing both sides of the fence to be safe when he lies.
The people who live there put up with it and vote accordingly.
The greater Boise ID area has a similar population (in terms of numbers) to D.C., yet one is very violent and the other is very peaceful. D.C. has the most stringent gun laws in the nation and Boise has relatively few. Based on this, I have to assume D.C. has a people problem. Ditto for Detroit and the others.
It is completely obvious what causes these cities to be the most dangerous list. I am laughing at some of you people skirting the obvious by saying things like they are cities with high numbers of “democrats”, or “check the demographics”. It is obvious that political correctness has poisoned Free Republic as much as the rest of America.
The answer as to why these cities are the most dangerous is that they all have a huge black underclass. Period, end of story. What has caused this American blacks to be characterized by a high poverty rate is up for debate. But make no mistake, if the cities on the list had an equally large percentage of Asians, for example, the crime rate would not be nearly so high.
“I hear that Detroit never really recovered after the 67 riots. And that vast areas of the city look like a war zone.”
-Exactly! I travel by bus with a band and most ‘big’ cities have pockets of decay, but when we drove through Detroit, it went on and on and on for miles. It looked like Civil War pictures Sherman’s march aftermath.
They can blame all the ‘hostile suburbanites’ that they want for fleeing the once great city in the 60’s and 70’s, but it is what the people of the city make it.
It is truly a garbage pit. America, get ready. This is going nationwide soon. Thank you mr. obama.
