General David Petraeus, architect of the US military surge credited with dramatically reducing violence in Iraq, has said that
Pakistan's leaders need to realise that their biggest threat comes from internal extremists, not from neighbouring India.
"It's an intellectually dislocating idea for the institutions of Pakistan," Petraeus, the leader of US Central Command, which oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, told a forum at the Harvard University Tuesday, referring to the country's military and political establishment.
The goal in working with Pakistan, whose Afghanistan border has become a haven for insurgents, is to help its officials understand that "the existential threat" facing Pakistan "is internal extremists and not India," Petraeus said.
The terrorist attacks on Mumbai last November by Pakistan-based extremist group Laskar-e-Taiba, "was a big setback," he said. The Mumbai attack "was a true 9/11 moment" for India, Petraeus said, adding the government in New Delhi "displayed considerable restraint."
Calling on Islamabad to change its mindset toward India, Petraeus said the shift in thinking that should take place in Pakistan is similar to what happened in the US after the Cold War. America had grown "comfortable" facing off against the Soviet Union, he added.
Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said last month that tensions with India over Kashmir were diverting Pakistan from the fight against extremism.
India realizes the "desirability of reducing tensions" so Pakistan can focus its efforts on combating terrorists, Petraeus told reporters later, according to the Boston Globe.
Many of the lessons learned and the ideas developed from the conflict in Iraq can be applied to the situations in Afghanistan and Pakistan, said Petraeus, but not without modification.
Pssst! Petraeus! The Taliban holds 70% of the entire country in Pakistan. Unfortunately, the difference between the Taliban and Islamic nut cases that currently govern Pakistan is only marginal. They both hate india and ALL infidels, like Mohammadans always do, and always did.
Perhaps if you concentrated on taking out the black robed devils who preach this "fundamentalist" form of Islam from every mosk in the land, and use them as terrorist havens, brainwashing centers and arms depots (they are real easy targets to spot, as are the ones wearing black robes)and installed "moderate" Imams in pink robes armed with "peaceful" korans with pages full of love and kindness instead of murder and mayhem, you might get somewhere in this "war on terror".
Failing that, perhaps it's time Pakistan didn't exist anymore, and became the nuclear wasteland part of India, as it was before the Brits created yet another Islamic terrorist training contry the world didn't need.
Rule of 668: When you have muslims for neighbors, you wind up giving them a little of your property — and then a little more — until you’re gone.
Truth!
But Petreaus has to speak diplomatically he can’t just come out and say Islam is a curse though he prolly knows this
This is interesting, Petraeous sounds like a good man.
He’s also a military genius.
Wish he would run for President. If we ever have any sort of real elections again.
The scourge of the world is Islam and Fascist China. The USSR has been replaced by China and Russia.
LOL! Now General Petraeus is a standup comedian too.
Well, a good sense of humor and timing and delivery are very, very good assets on the campaign trail.
