The Decline & Fall of Christian America (according to Newsweek)
Patriot Post Online ^ | April 20, 2009 | Media Research Center president L. Brent Bozell

"Newsweek greeted the coming of Easter with a black cover, and the headline 'The Decline and Fall of Christian America,' spelled out in red in the shape of a cross. Inside, it was more declarative: 'The End of Christian America.' Why? Because they found that the percentage of self-identified Christians had fallen 10 points since 1990. Okay, then let's compare. How much has Newsweek's circulation fallen since 1990? Just since 2007, their announced circulation has dropped by 52 percent. It would be more plausible to state 'The End of Newsweek.' At the end of 2007, Newsweek reduced its 'base rate' (or circulation guaranteed to advertisers) from 3.1 million to 2.6 million, a 16 percent drop. ... Newsweek's strategy in the midst of all its financial decline is to double and triple the amount of editorializing, cast aside all semblance of 'news' in favor of long, liberal essays by self-impressed Newsweek editor Jon Meacham and his international editor Fareed Zakaria. Is that really a business solution, or is it the captains performing violin solos on the deck of the Titanic? Christianity, in contrast to Newsweek, is in decent demographic shape. The American Religious Identification Survey that Newsweek touted -- from Trinity College in Connecticut -- estimated there are now 173.4 million self-identified Christians in America, up from 151.2 million in 1990. The percentage declined, but the actual number increased. ...[T]he top minds at Newsweek think they are the wisest of men, the definers of trends and the shepherds of public opinion. So why is everyone abandoning their advice? Why are the captains of a magazine that's lost half its circulation telling the rest of us where the mainstream lies?" --

The article says Newsweek's announced circulation is down 52% since 2007, while the number of Christians in America is up by 22 million since 1990.

But Newsweek says Christianity is dying. It would be more accurate to say that virtually all major newspapers and magazines are dying. Amen.

Our pastor made the exact same observation last Sunday to the roaring approval of the (growing) congregation.

Even more fascinating is the stubborn refusal to understand Christianity as a global phenomena.

Christianity has no less than 3.2 billion adherents in the world today. It has grown rapidly since 1990 and as a global percentage. Christiantiy is undercounted in places such as China where there likely no less than 70 million Christians.

Consider further that Christianity holds that it is permissible to translate the Bible into any language for purposes of evangelism. It has been translated into more than 120 languages.

On the other hand, its closest demographic rival requires that the sacred text [Koran] only be read in Arabic.

Now, which one is more likely to permeate global humanity more rapidly?

The answer is rather clear and says a lot about why political tensions are as they are particularly along fault lines such as Africa.

Put Newsweek to rest and enjoy the continual Resurrection of Christianity arising from the blood of its martyrs.

Yep, Instead of 'The Decline and Fall of Christian America,' it should have read 'The Decline and Fall of NEWSWEEK'

Get back to me when Newsweek has been around for 2,000 years.

Amen.

As for man, his days are as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth;
For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place therof shall know it no more.
But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him,
and His righteousness unto children's children; to such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His commandments to do them.
Psalm 103: 15-18

No need to over analyze this or get all pious.

It's a "trend" spotted by Newsweek, therefore it's BS. Period.

Everything published or broadcast by Newsweek is BS. Same for the NY Times, Boston Globe, Pravda, al Jazeera, Washington Post, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, Time, Fortune, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNBC, CNN, et cetera.

Cancel your newspaper and magazine subscriptions and kill your TV.
