WASHINGTON (CNN — The Liberty Sun, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship bound for Mombasa, Kenya, was attacked Tuesday by Somali pirates, according to a NATO source with direct knowledge of the matter.

It was an unsuccessful attack, and the pirates never made it onto the ship. The vessel is now being escorted by a coalition ship, still bound for Mombasa.

Any ship captain sailing into that area without a couple of machine guns on board and easily accessible, is a fool. Sink a dozen pirate boats a week for a month and it will stop for while.

>Any ship captain sailing into that area without a couple of machine guns on board and easily accessible...

Arming merchant vessels is illegal under treaty.
Having mariners armed is likewise unlawful.
Other countries will not let openly armed vessels into port.

Would I have all of that changed?
Sure thing, but this is what it is.
I see almost no chance of Hussein pushing for “change” like that

Arm the merchant ships... and then when any port asks, lie about it.

If asked how they fought off a pirate attack, it was ‘magic’. And dare them to prove it otherwise.

Considering how much guff rogue nations can deliver to the West... that we accept, despite knowing it to be lies, it stands to reason that we can offer the same.

Have the ship’s cook keep several big containers of cooking oil nice and hot at about 210 degrees, just short of boiling, and when these effin pirates try to board the ship, bring those containers up on deck, and dump it on the pirates.

Extra crispy pirate, served with a garnish of their own sh*t, from crapping their pants.
