WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Pirates off the eastern coast of Africa fired on U.S. sailors Saturday as they tried to reach the lifeboat where an American captain is being held, a U.S. official familiar with the situation told CNN.
The gunfire forced the sailors, who did not return fire, to turn back, the official said.
The incident took place some 12 hours ago as the guided missile destroyer USS Bainbridge sent a small team toward the lifeboat, said the official.

That appears to be the case.
Under orders from the pu$$y in chief to do nothing or face Courts Martial. This terrorist attack is being sponsored and approved by hussein and his band of traitors.

Possible obie orders: rescue the captain, but shooting and guns not allowed. Don't hurt anyone. Please.
I don't know. Time will tell. Until then, I hope for the best...while never ruling out the worst.
We need 50 resolutions. One a month. In 4 years, we will have a new president who will rescue the captain who has been living in the lifeboat for 4 years, along with his well-fed captors.
Captain Phillips alive or the Rasuli dead!
While that’s all nice and good, it’s not going to affect the next boatloads of pirates.
I can’t fugure out why they aren’t using snipers either. This is ridiculous
Please leave Michelle's bare arms out of this. That is just totally non sequitur, and completely inappropriate. Sheeeesh!
You were right. Thanks.

Obama: "Can't I just eat my waffle?"
Forget the snipers, why are the SEALs not in the water underneath the lifeboat with a Black & Decker brace and drill?
Come to think of it, SEALS are probably practicing a rescue of the captain (only) on a different lifeboat as we speak.
Would you say that about this post Vatican blocks Caroline Kennedy appointment as US ambassador?
why didn’t they return fire??? now these pirates know that they can shoot n we won’t return fire...great
this pic is too funny
At sea it's a lot harder shot to take. Especially at a longer range. Plus you have to have enough guns on target to take out all the pirates and what if some of them are below decks snoozing, going to the "head" or guarding prisoners? Those guys get one whiff of a sniper attack and they'll "OFF" our guys and that would be very bad. It's a hard shot because everything is in motion: Wave action produces wobbles on both shooting platforms and those actions are different every time, so you can't time or judge them like you can the wind, which will also be a factor here. It's be better to use the snipers just prior to a SEAL assault and take out all folks visible on deck before the boys either fast rope down from choppers or scale the sides from the sea.
Whys was the USS bainbridge sent if all they are going to do is sit on station and negotiate? Obama obviously doesn’t want to harm these Muzzies because he himself is one. Obama is DIGUSTING with a Capital D!
Well as hard as it is to say, if they can’t take out the pirates at the risk of also taking out the Captain it must be done.
If it comes down to the O letting them go back to Somali with the Captain it’s going to be hell for this American Citizen any way you look at it.
Wonder what the POTUS O would be doing if these “pirates” would have boarded a 1500 cruise ship with a large majority being innocent victims?
When Cnina attacked and forced down one of our Naval Aircraft, President George W. Bush sent a letter stating that the United States was "very sorry" for the death of Chinese pilot Wang Wei, and "We are very sorry the entering of China's airspace and the landing did not have verbal clearance."
U.S. Navy engineers said the EP-3 could be repaired in 812 months, but China refused to allow it to be flown off Hainan island. The disassembled aircraft was released on July 3, 2001, and was returned to the United States by the Russian company Polyot in an Antonov 124-100.
In addition to paying for the dismantling and shipping of the EP-3, the United States paid for the 11 days of food and lodging supplied by the Chinese government to the aircraft's crew, in the amount of $34,000.
