America is not a Christian Nation, so says Christopher Hitchens and is debated by Ken Blackwell

TOPICS: Culture/Society; Philosophy
KEYWORDS: atheism; blackwell; christiannation; foundingfathers; hitchens; holyweek
Hitchens, in his same old tired arrogant way acts as if Christianity was not even mentioned in the first 232 years of the nation's history. Blackwell should have asked him,"Have any presidents in our history ever mentioned the name of Jesus Christ, has any president ever prayed to Jesus Christ publicly?" Hey Hitchens, how about every single one!

If you need an indicator of how strong the hate is towards Christians nowadays, just read the youtube comments. They’ll curl your hair.

So tired of the bile spewed at Christians. It’s the only religion that is “ok” to bash repeatedly.

“So tired of the bile spewed at Christians. It’s the only religion that is “ok” to bash repeatedly.”

That’s because Christians seldom fight back. They turn the other cheek. Just like George Bush did. Sure worked for him, didn’t it. We Christians have got to get back to the “Crusaders” mentality about our religion. Less emphasis on martyrdom, and more on standing up for our religious beliefs and to act on that. Enough of this namby pamby stuff. Otherwise, Christianity will disappear to tougher, stronger religions such as Islam. We must learn to fight fire with fire, unless you enjoy masochistic martyrdom. Crusaders stood up for their religion and fought. We Christians today whine and moan and groan and do nothing to fight back. You reap what you sow.

Hitchens’ argument is technically accurate but ultimately meaningless. United States is not a Christian nation in a sense that, for example, Great Britain is a Christian nation where the head of state (the monarch) also is the head of the official Church. Or that Saudi is a Muslim nation - where there is one official religion and practice of any other faith is forbidden under the penalty of death.

However, this does not negate the fact that Christianity has a tremendous impact on American public life, much more than in, the officially Christian, Great Britain.

“We must learn to fight fire with fire”, I agree. In fact you also just made a great case as to why we have to be (or should be) agressive against radical Islam. The strong survive. I think we are going to see the pendulum go wildly to the left even more and then it will swing back in our favor, or at least enough where we can fight with the pendulum swinging towards our cause(s).

I agree. The only thing Hitchens could do was to try to narrow the discussion to the legal separation of church and government. The question “Are we a Christian nation?” was broader than that.

Ken Blackwell (who the hell is he?) won that debate by a mile by showing that Christianity was the basis our our culture and principals; e.g., our notion of the primacy of the individual over that of the state, and fact that that our moral precepts are grounded in Christianity.

I respect Hitchens for the courage he showed during the 90’s in expressing his outrage after Clinton let loose his attack dogs on Monica Lewinsky. I’m sure that Hitchens had to do a lot of his drinking alone after that. I like to read Hitchen’s stuff and apparently he had loathed Clinton for years and the Lewinsky thing was more than he could take. Hitchens is virtually unique among far leftists in that he calls them as he sees them.

But having said that,Blackwell dominated the discussion even with his soft spoken style. That’s because he was right.

Agreed. Notice this vile hate for God and Christians in those comments year ago. I think that it is delusional and wishful thinking to call America a Christian nation. This country seems rather heathen and depraved.

That was hard to watch. I like Blackwell, but he got his butt handed to him there.
