You have to admit it's weird that the intruders opened fire as soon as they broke down the door.
Add to this weirdness that the guy borrowed a handgun from his father and took it to the range for target practice.
Although these could be just a coincidence, on the surface, it sounds like the guy ran afoul (read: drug deal gone bad) of some bad people and was expecting them to come after him, which it would appear they did.
If you accept that the WOsD is a valid pursuit, which I do not, then this would be a reasonable investigative step on the part of the police.

I mis-read the article. The guy did not borrow the gun from his dad.
Sorry.
That makes more sense the inner city low level criminals I met like to pull up in x cop Cars some street creed or advantage on other members forgot exact street reason to owning cop cars
Even if I did accept the WOsD as a valid pursuit, this isn't reasonable to me.
Without some other indicator it is not reasonable to search the home of a breakin victim for drugs or paraphenalia. Period.
Or maybe he turned in the local drug dealer on the corner.
Irrelevant. The fact that there is a bong in my closet does not mean I abdicate my right to defend my life or the lives of my loved ones.
Certainly a possibility.
Assuming this fellow and his girl friend are good people I only regret he was not more proficient with his firearm.
I purchased a semi pistol in December. Being retired military it’s not as if I’m not acquainted with fire arms. But it has also been over 20 years since I fired one. To renew my proficiency I’ve been going to the range every two weeks. Once I’m comfortable that I am no danger of accidentally hurting myself or others I’ll enroll in a combat course.
People need to realize that simply having a fire arm does not in and of itself protect them. One must become proficient in accuracy and gun handling. Then you must learn to shoot under stress. Of course, owning a fire arm carries with it the responsibility to be safe (this includes proper safe guarding of the weapon at home) and accurate.
The former Giant, Burress, is the poster child for someone that did not understand that responsibility came with possessing a fire arm. Fortunately he only injured himself.
Can I ask WTF are they doing that for?
The second violation of this person's liberty in one day.
