Deon Shippy and his girlfriend, Casey McKinney, decided to take full advantage of their day off by catching a few extra winks Monday morning.
But their peaceful slumber was shattered shortly after 10 a.m. when an armed gunman forced his way into their duplex at 4 Twin Woods Drive near Converse and opened fire.
"We were still asleep and I heard a loud bang," Shippy said. "I thought my punching bag had fallen off the porch. Casey said someone was breaking through the door, and I got up and bullets started flying past my head. One hit her in the arm. I told her to hide under the bed and I grabbed my gun and started shooting back."
Police responded to the home invasion call at 10:15 a.m. They arrived on the scene and found McKinney bleeding from a bullet wound on her left forearm. She was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for treatment and was later released.
Witnesses said the gunman and an accomplice fled the scene in a black 1980s Ford Crown Victoria with dual exhaust. They described the suspects as two black males.
Authorities said Shippy and the intruder exchanged more than a dozen shots through a bedroom door before the suspect retreated. Bullet holes were visible on the exterior of the home near Shippy's bedroom window.
Shippy said he might have wounded one of the suspects during the melee, but investigators were unable to confirm that Monday.
"We arrived and found one person had been shot and determined that there was a forced entry," said Sgt. Allan Wood with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office. "We heard that perhaps one of the suspects was shot. There were several shots exchanged by both parties."
Wood said a motive for the intrusion had not been established, but it did not appear to be a random crime.
He would not comment on what type of gun was fired by the suspect and said Shippy returned fire with a pistol.
Family members said Shippy had lived in the home for about a year. They said he is a full-time employee for a local delivery company and a student at Spartanburg Community College.
Police searched the home and found no evidence of illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.
Shippy "appeared to be an upstanding member of the community," Wood said. "But the odds are against this being a random incident. The couple is very lucky and their family is also very lucky."
Shippy's father, Michael Shippy, had just returned home Monday morning from working his third-shift job when he received a frantic call from his son, who said he had just thwarted an armed intruder.
"I was concerned about my son," he said. "Was he protected? Was he hurt? These are all the things that run through your mind."
Michael Shippy said he and his son had just taken the gun out a few weeks ago for target practice. "I'm glad he had a gun and I'm glad he knew how to use it," he said. "It's scary. This was in broad daylight. They are blessed because anything could have happened."
No suspects identified yet Maj. Dan Johnson of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said no suspects had been identified as of late Monday and urged anyone with information to call 503-4527.
Still, the important thing... they are both alive.
Dems don’t want you to defend your home and loved ones. They would rather have the “downtrodden” just walk in and take whatever they want, and hurt, injure, maim, rape and kill anyone they want. After all, it’s just “justice” and redistribution of wealth to those who deserve it.
And I’m not kidding or exaggerating.
There's more to the story.
So they are doing a burglary by going through house and shooting at doors that’s how you steal stuff
It sounds more like payment collection pass due notice
That’s exactly the time that I’ve said nobody would break in my house at because it’s broad daylight. I really must get a piece.
Can happen any time of day. My neighbor was robbed at 4:00 P.M. The thieves must have known his schedule.
Sorry, that article is no longer available.

Yes, there is more to this story for sure....especially when there’s a punching bag hanging on the front porch.
Better yet,get a 12 gauge pump. It’s a vicious weapon at close ranges like that.
Victims are suspects and assumed guilty of something. Maybe the guy had
a really nice car sitting outside.
Not a random home invasion!
Works full time for a delivery company...
Hmmmm...is he against EFCA in a non-teamster shop? Looks like someone knew he’d have the day off.
Two Words:
Piece Peace.
Yes, I’m amused at the wild speculation. I particularly like the comment about the punching bag and its having some kind of dark implication.
Perhaps it was a case of mistaken identity/address on the part of the shooters. Here’s my wild speculation: Shooters, or someone they represent, are owed money. Person owing the money gives them false address or they obtain wrong address. Assualt wrong house.
Good luck. Handguns & Ammo prices have gone thru the roof since O'Bama. Also Ammo is almost impossible to find now.
Thankfully my brother has a Taurus that he’s willing to part with relatively cheap. That should do until I get a shotgun for the house.
Maybe they were just trying to get enough money to replace their 80's Ford Crown Victoria with Dual Exhausts. By the way, a Crown Vic with dual exhaust is likely a retired police cruiser.
Helter Skelter
Charles Manson just came along too early before ACORN.
“Wood said a motive for the intrusion had not been established, but it did not appear to be a random crime.”
There’s more to the story.
More range time, for one thing.
This is BS!
Why do the police need to search your home for "evidence of illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia" when you have had an armed intrusion into your home.
BS!
