Dem senator delivers blow to union bill (Feinstein not on board with card check)

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) on Tuesday told Capitol Hill reporters that she is skeptical of the Employee Free Choice Act, possibly dealing another deadly blow to the legislation.

Feinstein's skepticism, coming a week after Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) announced his opposition, means Democratic leaders might find themselves in an even deeper hole as they search for 60 votes to move the so-called "card-check" bill.

"I think in this economy that what has to happen is that the unions and management get together and try to see if they can work out something," Feinstein said. "The card-check bill, as drafted, in this economy, is extraordinarily difficult and I think almost a lightning rod to dissent. I think there are some things that can be done. I've talked with both sides and continue to talk to both sides to see if it isn't possible to work something out."

Feinstein hedged when asked if she was definitely opposed.

"I'm not on the bill, and I said what I said," she said.

I suspect she’s taking heat from union rank and file. When I was a union member I know I sure wouldn’t have wanted it and can’t imagine too many of my coworkers would have been thrilled about it either.

There’s a lot of crap like this that Democrats could safely support in the past, knowing that it would never pass. That has changed.

She is talking out of both sides of her mouth. There will be cosmetic changes to the bill and she will support it with minimal changes.

Maybe a pre-emptive strike is needed here. We have the "no call" list for telemarketers do we not? Why not one big list of people that would rather not be boothered with this as well?

A national "I vote NO" list?

So now Specter is the standard the democrats use when considering their vote.

I think in the back of her pointed little head, Feinstein is thinking about GM.

I guess that now they need a couple more stooges from the so-called conservative party. Which ones could it be?

Specter was really their only possibility. I’d say card check is dead in the water for this congress, barring something unusual.

“skeptical” does not mean she won’t go along with her comrades.

After Specter’s “veto”, she knows it will not pass and it doesn’t have a popular support, so she’d rather not waste time with it as Dems want to push Healthcare and Carbon cap-and-trade bills.

That is very welcome news. I frankly don’t see how anyone not in the unions’ pocket would favor such brazely undemocratic legislation.

BULL! Dems are scared s--tless of passing this bill. Trust me, even my two Rat Senators (Kohl and Feingold) are catching flak from the manufacturers and from the trucking company I work at over this. This bill will not pass you can bank on it - it is the railroad spike to the economy.

I don’t know what Feinstein is so worried about. Rachel Maddow said just the other day that this bill isn’t about doing away with the secret ballot. It’s about giving union leadership a choice between using a secret ballots or using tire slashings to organize shops. Isn’t choice a good thing?
