Notre Dame draws Texas fire from Cardinal DiNardo

Houston, Texas, Mar 28, 2009 / 04:46 pm (CNA).- Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, on Friday became the first American cardinal to publicly criticize the University of Notre Dame for inviting President Barack Obama to be this year's commencement speaker and to award him with an honorary law degree.

In his weekly "A Shepherd's Message" in the Texas Catholic Herald, Cardinal DiNardo expresses his disappointment with Notre Dame's decision.

Cardinal DiNardo begins his column by commenting on Pope Benedict's recent letter explaining his decision to lift the excommunications of the four bishops ordained by the schismatic Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. Praising the Pope's call for internal peace in the Church, the Cardinal says that "vigorous and heartfelt discussion, even debate, needs to be placed in the arms of charity for effectiveness."

"In light of what I wrote above," the cardinal says in the final part of his column, "I want to venture a comment on the recently released statement of the University of Notre Dame; that statement noted that the President has accepted an invitation to give the Commencement Address this year as well as receive an Honorary Law Degree."

“I find the invitation very disappointing,” Cardinal DiNardo writes.

"Though I can understand the desire by a university to have the prestige of a commencement address by the President of the United States, the fundamental moral issue of the inestimable worth of the human person from conception to natural death is a principle that soaks all our lives as Catholics, and all our efforts at formation, especially education at Catholic places of higher learning."

According to Cardinal DiNardo, “the President has made clear by word and deed that he will promote abortion and will remove even those limited sanctions that control this act of violence against the human person. The Bishops of the United States published a document a few years ago asking all Catholic universities to avoid giving a platform or an award to those politicians or public figures who promote the taking of unborn human life. Even given the dignity of Office of the President, this offer is still providing a platform and an award for a public figure who has been candid on his pro-abortion views."

"Particularly troubling, he continues, is the Honorary Law Degree since it recognizes that the person is a 'Teacher,' in this case of the Law. I think that this decision requires charitable but vigorous critique.

It is impossible for me to understand how any Notre Dame alumni worth his or her salt would ever donate one blessed penny to that school.

If the Founding Fathers, back in 1776, had acted as wimpish as Notre Dame today .... we would all be speaking with a British accent and paying our tithes to the Church of England, and bowing down to King George III.

Up until this week, I was proud of Notre Dame, and I’m not even Catholic.

The irony is a conservative British politician denounced the socialist Prime Minister's spending this past week.

I signed a petition last week.
It would be sad if it has to go all the way to the Pope.
On the other hand, this situation puts the issue of Life squarely in front of Catholics across the country.

No way should a person who has accomplished absolutely nothing be awarded an honorary degree, and he will only be pres__ent less than 6 months....

They disgrace the name of the Fighting Irish.

That Catholic universities don’t act very Catholic is no surprise to anyone who’s ever attended one.

“The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

The local bishop will not be at Notre Dame.

Other Bishops have spoken.

Archbishop Burke has spoken.

Now US Cardinal DiNardo has spoken.

With less than 200 Cardinals in the world, just a guess with a month and a half to go the Pope will hear about it.

There are about 5 ‘real’ catholic colleges in America. I’m proud and thankful to say that my oldest daughter attended one, Franciscan University at Stuebenville.

Bump for Stuebie U!

I'm glad D'Arcy came out and said he wasn't going to attend the graduation Mass. Most bishops are loathe to speak about scandals in others' dioceses. Bsp D'Arcy seems to have given them cover by his open refusal to attend. Hooray for Cdl DiNardo!

Our bishops are finally starting to denounce Catholics in authority who cause scandal. I hope momentum builds to stop Zero from speaking there.

It's so sad that this reflects badly on the good priests who serve at Notre Dame. I grew up just north on South Bend in Niles, MI and have gone to the Basilica many times for confession on Saturday evenings. They have a lot of good confessors there. That's always been more important than the "Fighting Irish," "Touchdown Jesus," and all the hoopla over sports. Nothing against the sports stuff, but there are more important things....

Daugher number 2 wanted to attend there, still might.

Great school.

We should call Cardinal DiNardo and Bishops Aymond and D'arcy and thank them. They are treasures in the Catholic Church.

I hope the pope decides to speak out about this matter.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I've heard that Ave Maria is having some problems. FWIW, take a look at:

I'm not necessarily disagreeing but think you meant this post for someone else since I didn't make the comment.
