The Departure: A Conservative Exodus to Costa Rica?
Pajamas Media ^ | March 28 | Adam Graham

Posted on 03/28/2009 7:49:31 AM PDT by AJKauf

Dallas Morning News columnist Rod Dreher may have to fly to Costa Rica if he wants to see some of his friends.

In one of his recent blogs, Dreher told of multiple people discussing potential moves to Costa Rica if things go downhill. These aren’t people who are eager to join Paulville. Rather, these are normal, middle-class conservatives who are considering moving to Costa Rica if the country goes downhill under President Obama.

One of the commenters on Dreher’s blog asked if this was not unlike liberals throwing a fit in 2004 and threatening to leave if Bush won. Not exactly. The left’s threat was always more of a threat to hold its breath if it didn’t get its way. The concerns of Dreher’s friends seem to have little to do with the election and far more to do with the results of Obama’s policies. So all this talk of leaving doesn’t remind me of Alec Baldwin’s threat to deprive our nation of his presence. Instead, it reminds me of a white Zimbabwean I recently met at a writer’s conference. She spoke with a longing for home, a love of a place thousands of miles away that she could only picture in her memories. Zimbabwe is not a place where one is able to prosper and thrive. At this time, many people wonder if the same thing could happen in America.

How legitimate is the concern? ...

I speculated for a time the same thing, only my first investigation was of New Zealand...

I think that’s disgusting, actually. Running away will certainly not help; it just leaves fewer of us. What if the Founding Fathers had left because things were getting bad?

This doesn’t surprise me as I know quite a few folks heading to Costa and Panama and other points south.

These aren’t weirdos either, these are engineers and IT folks - can you say brain drain?

I agree. However, if the Founding Fathers could see what happened, they most likely wouldn’t have gone through the effort...let England prop up the corpse.

Last fall, I told my children that if I were younger, I would be doing research for a place to settle and start over.

I already know people who live there who were citizens of the USA. So sad but we either stay and fight, seperate the country, or move out of it.

I understand you sentiment, but then again, with the new Involuntary Servitude act, I don’t want my kids put into government re educaton camps! So what does one do? I have two businesses, can’t walk away from them. But my kids? What do I do with them?

I sized up the possibility of an Obamanation last summer, and acted accordingly by buying a place in Sicily. I’ll be back if and when it’s over, or if things go “hot.”

There is no way that the British Empire could have been worse than our current administration. Not even close.

Those with families probably should leave. Single conservatives should stay and be martyred.

I’ve already seen too many enslaved children in South East Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. No more!

If American freedom ceases, all freedom ceases. Cost Rica exists because the USA exists. France and Sweden can act like France and Sweden because the USA exists.

If we fail here, all freedom fails, sooner or later.

“What if the Founding Fathers had left because things were getting bad?”

With all due respect, the people who came to the new world were mostly running away from the old one for religious freedom or economic opportunity.

I’d not like to leave America either, but I’m not thrilled about my kids being born into slavery to repay national debt to China and Japan.

Another tea party?

Those have certainly been effective, eh?

I can't believe how many pieces of legislation have been turned around based on the political class trembling in fear of Lipton.

A big difference is that if ODumbo is successful in implementing his disastrous policies, it won't be just conservatives who will be fleeing from the chaos. Whereas when the Alec Baldwins of the world were squealing about Bush shredding the constitution, they were largely just bloviating (they're still here, after all).

To a lesser extent, a similar situation exists in New England, where a lot of (too many) liberal Massholes have fled from the glorious People's Republic that they had once supported so entuhsiastically, now that their idiotic policies have had their inevitable outcome, and they have taken up residence in the once-free-but-now-occupied-territory of New Hampshire, where they are again soiling the nest...
