Discussion Topic: Virginia Gun Shop Gets Sex-Shop Justice

From The Washington Post:

"To many in Old Town Alexandria, the sex shop that opened recently on King Street is nothing short of scandalous. . . .

But to Michael Zarlenga, it's justice.

Zarlenga spent $350,000 on plans to expand his hunting and fishing store, the Trophy Room. He worked with city officials for almost two years and thought he had their support -- until the architectural review board told him he couldn't alter the historic property.

Furious and out of money, Zarlenga rented the space to its newest occupant, Le Tache.

"I can't say I didn't know it would ruffle feathers," said Zarlenga, 41. "Actually, I was hoping for a fast-food chain because I thought that would be more annoying to the city."

What do you think of Zarlenga’s brand of justice?

Hey
Didn’t the phrase “Hookers” come from those patriotic women who used to follow behind General Hooker, in the Civil War???

Good for the gun store owner. Rub their nose in it, snooty little Alexandria liberals got their heads up their youknowwhats. These are the people who vote for Jim Moran and Tim Kaine. Let them eat cake.

Can't think of a single property owner in the Alexandria historic district who didn't know what he'd bought into or what the owner next door had agreed to.

Hard to cry for this guy.

That Civil War soldier would, of course, have been ROBERT E. LEE. Have you no shame?

I think I bought a 22 rifle from him about 15 years ago. The shop was on the 2nd floor half way up the hill on King Street.

If he sold solar panels rather than guns, the new store would have been just fine. The city deserves it! I hope whores take over the street and druggies abound!

So you are in the group that thinks we should worship every square inch any historical figure has walked on? And cordon off all these areas as sacred historical landmarks?

Petulance is the word you're looking for, not justice.

The Alexandria Historic District was agreed to by the owners in a private covenant. If you'd read closely you'd seen that this guy wanted to EXPAND his operation into a piece of property covered by the Historic District.

These district rules in Virginia are not different than the private covenants in Houston that keep the riffraff out of the better parts of town.

(BTW, there are still a few properties in Alexandria not covered by the District. You can probably buy them cheap during the Obama Depression. Best you get a move on.)

I guess then you think riff raff is a gun store, and a sex shop is not riff raff?

why not have a riff raff law????

why all this burden on property owners?

The politicians must be happy, they tend to be the biggest client base for hookers anyway

Sounds like good, solid revenge for the snots that run Alexandria.

Last time I shopped there - always a pain because of the difficulty getting a parking place and the horribly timed/close together traffic lights - I came back to my car and found a meter maid affixing a parking ticket.

I was sure that I was in the right - depending on the correct interpretation of a whole pole full of parking signs - but she insisted that I was wrong and I got the ticket.

I paid the ticket and wrote a letter to the Alexandria city government complaining about the difficulty with parking and the 7-8 parking limit signs - and never got an answer.

Haven't been back to Alexandria for any reason for over ten years now.

Hope they enjoyed the fine.

Our toybox needs a little rounding out. I think Mrs. L and I will sit down and order something from this gentleman this evening.

Such cleverness should not go unrewarded.

The original property owners who obtained their Historic District sought to protect their property values against the arrival of the nearby public housing project.

Obviously business people in Alexandria have as much interest in guns as anyone else, which are available for sale in many places. PLUS, you can strap a holster on and carry your guns in the open without permits.

This guy doesn't want to live with the rules agreed to by the guy he bought the place from. AND, he was changing the character of the building.

We have a similar operation in our own neighborhood. All it does is serve to provide used panties to perverts. We'd rather it move elsewhere.
