Quo Vadis GOP?
self | 3.27.2009 | Leo Carpathian

Just received this from Michael Steele in the email:

"As one of my first official acts as Chairman, I've commissioned a survey of Republican activists in EVERY state. I want to hear from each of you to understand your thoughts and opinions about our Party and how we can once again be the party of ideas.

That's why I'm asking you to do two very important things for me:

1) Please take a moment right now to fill out online the State of the Republican Party Survey for the RNC. I want you to be honest and candid in your answers -- there's no need to sugar-coat your responses after our Party's performances in the last two elections. 2) And when you complete your survey, please make a secure online contribution of $1,000, $500, $100, $50, or $25 to help move our Party forward and elect more Republicans in the 2009 state and 2010 congressional elections.

If you choose not to participate in this crucial project, the RNC cannot create a campaign plan to educate and mobilize the millions of Republicans we need to resist the liberal agenda Barack Obama and the Pelosi-Reid Democrats are attempting to ram through Congress.

Your guidance will also help us develop new strategies for winning the two Governor's races held this year.

The elections in New Jersey and Virginia offer Republicans a chance to demonstrate that we got your message and will help us seize the momentum.

But we cannot lay the groundwork for winning this year and next without your participation in this survey and your active involvement in the RNC.

So please complete your State of the Republican Party Survey online today and support the RNC's efforts to grow our Party by making a secure contribution of $1,000, $500, $100, $50, or $25."

Besides fishing for money, I find this almost insulting, GOP chairman is surveying and asking me which direction should GOP go?

I expect the GOP chairman to KNOW what happened (posturing to RATs) to lose the elections and party going to dumpster. If he is too blind, maybe he should listen to Rush et al, rather than calling him entertainer.

If looking for direction, there is a great example by Ronaldus Magnus (that's Reagan for you Rio Linda pubbies). Just use his proven model and improve on it if you can. No "reaching" accross the isle, but hitting the RATs with same "favors" as they extended to GOP government. It is a WAR!!! So don't ask clueless, but show leadership, true conservative and proven program, then we will consider supporting you with $$$.

Time for major transfusion, shake up, and new FReeper blood in the GOP ranks, from the local office to the White House!!!

See ya'll at the tea parties and voting the weaklings out of offices.

I answered the survey. It's an important vehicle to get the message to the RNC leadership; especially if you take the time to WRITE your opinions in the blocks provided.

Why diss an honest effort to hear from the party membership en masse? I APPLAUD this effort!

Dear Mr. Steal-our-money,

Begging for money from those who you and other RINO’s have ignored is one thing to stop.

Please resign your post and allow a conservative to take the position.

Thanks,
Defrauded ex-republican consevative

Yeah, I got this too. Haven’t decided whether to fill it in and send it back yet, mainly because I have no intention whatsoever of “donating” anything to the RNC until they get their act together, and I’m wondering whether any surveys that come back without a donation attached just get deleted.

I imagine those dems who registered Republican are filling out their surveys right now.

The man can be good a lot of the time, clueless at others. That’s what worries me about him. He’s not always sure what a conservative is.

I doubt they even read the survey answers. They just take the checks, if any, and trash the survey. That is what I am told by someone who worked at RNC!

I think the RNC has finally given up asking me for money.

I used to get silly surveys from them wrapped around funding requests. The problem I have with them, or any multiple choice survey, is that it closes the questions and options to what the surveyer perceives. Generally there is a 1-inch space for comments on a 1/3 sheet paper survey, and I see no evidence that anyone ever read my comments - most especially the “Build the damn wall if you want anymore money” or “Stop spending my taxes like drunken sailors if you want any more money” ones.

If the RNC really wants to know what the grass roots want, it ought to commission an open-ended survey, where members could speak on any subject and then spend the money to do some real analysis - and don’t wrap it in a request to continue funding people who have a pretty lousy track record of paying attention.

Or, they could skip the whole survey and just listen to Rush or several other radio hosts for a week - pretty much can sum up the major issues by spending a few hours a day listening in.

Just MHO...

“Besides fishing for money, I find this almost insulting, GOP chairman is surveying and asking me which direction should GOP go? “

MSNBC’s Morning Joe, of all places, absolutely nailed this one. They showed a clip of Boehner at a news conference. As Boehner was leaving, a reporter asked if he’d be in favor of further bailouts. The reply? “Hmmmm... we’ll see.”

Then they showed that MP dressing down Gordon Brown.

The point? There is room for real conservatives. The MP got famous because he took a chance, and was passionate about what he said. He wasn’t triangulating, he actually seemed to believe and care about his message.

The field is wide open for conservative polititicans. There are very few on the national scene, and even the libs realize that true conservatives are necessary for a counterpoint.

Steele is useless and should be dismissed ASAP.

There is widespread distrust of politicians right now. I do not trust either the Democrats or Republicans.

My expectation is that even if the survey were to result in 90% of returns calling for the Fair Tax, and the GOP might announce that the people overwhelmingly support a gentle rollback to tax levels seen under George W. Bush. I think they say what they want to say and use surveys as camouflage.

The way to earn back people's trust is to show real leadership -- list out 10 things which the party leadership believes in and intends to do. Then do those 10 things. A positive demonstration of leadership and integrity will go a long way.

I ain't holding my breath.

The GOP is a "moderate" party. The vast majority are "moderate"-- always have been, always will be. They are in control. They hand-picked a moderate for Reagans' VP, which was exactly NOT want the people wanted, then gave us Dole and Bush II. If the GOP hadn't run its favorite moderate candidates, Clinton and Obama wouldn't have been elected, and Gore and Kerry wouldn't have come close. And, Steele would not be the GOP chairman.

It should be obvious to conservatives at this point that we don't have the clout and won't change the GOP. Conservatives should have nothing to do with that party. WE have been the real RINOs.

As we say in the military, SSDD (Same Sh*t, Different Day). I’m really sick of being underestimated, of having these “smart people” assume they can manipulate my pride and/or patriotism to keep themselves in power.

Here’s what I just wrote back,

Maintain my trust? If you want to maintain my trust, then return to the conservative values that made the GOP great. It was CONSERVATISM that won elections for us in 1980, 1984, and 1994. It was “moderacy” which LOST us elections in 2006 and 2008. Our Presidential candidate was terrible - and he and his staff are still losers to this day. If the GOP wants to win elections, then you need to run Sarah Palins, not John McCains.

Keep my trust? Get rid of the RINOs. Give Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski (to start with) their walking papers. Support CONSERVATIVES in primary challenges. Make your loyalty be to CONSERVATISM, not to any politician who happens to have an “R” after his name.

I am a precinct chair in my county party. I am active in my county, I have a large mailing list, and a lot of personal influence with those on that list. Currently, my advice to everyone on my list is DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO REPUBLICAN ORGANS. Do not give money to the RNC, NRSC, NRCC, etc. Do not give money until these organisations affirm their commitment to conservatism and support conservatives instead of RINOs. Give money to individual conservative candidates and to conservative PACs, instead.

Until the GOP returns to conservatism, it will remain the minority party. Look at the lesson of history, if nothing else. When the GOP won, it was because they demonstrated CONSERVATIVE leadership on issues people care about. When the GOP loses, it is because they play “me-too” with the Democrats. Tell our Republican elected officials in Congress and the Senate to get conservative or get out. If they can’t show leadership, then they won’t be given anything to lead by the people of this country - plain and simple.

The people of this country want leadership, and are fundamentally conservative. Majorities in this country are conservative on social issues like gay marriage and abortion, and on fiscal issues like tax cutting and fiscal responsibility. Tap into that. If you continue to mimick the Democrats while remaining a half step behind them, then people will either not vote at all, or will vote for the Dems, since why not just vote for the real thing?

Look - conservative leadership must come from the GOP. It’s not going to come from the myriad of pissant little waste of time third parties out there. Nor SHOULD it. Conservatives - who make up the plurality in this nation, despite what the news media may say - need to be united. But right now, guess what? You’re giving them nothing to be united ABOUT. Change that, and you’ll change the Party’s electoral fortunes. Change that, and I might even start giving money to official Party organs again. Don’t change that, and you can just continue to slide into irrelevancy.

Remember 1930 - 1980? Remember when the GOP was basically a tiny little speedbump on the road to the implementation of the Democrat agenda of “War on Poverty” and radical social liberalisation? The reason is because the Party was dominated by the Rockefeller Republicans, the country clubbers who thought we had to be “reasonable” - by which they meant liberal and accommodating. Worked out great, eh? How often did the GOP control Congress during that period, eh? How often did we have actual conservative, ethical Republicans in office who were worth anything for preserving what made America great? I trust you all are students enough of history to see where I’m going with this.

Please - I can speak for a large portion of the grassroots activists out there when I say this: “Return to true, real, solid, leadership conservatism, or else return to the bad old days of permanent minority status and electoral irrelevancy. Don’t listen to David Frum or Kathleen Parker. Listen to US, your base, your grassroots, your source of funding, your source of on-the-ground manpower.

Respectfully,
[[Name deleted]]

Purge the liberal RINOs or go pound sand Mr Steele. I will only donate to Conservative candidates, No donations to support liberal RINOs through the RINO party.

The RINO Party Alert.

Just say no to liberals, turncoats, and traitors!

We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals of our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the party over to the so-called moderates wouldn't make any sense at all.
