Drug testing for welfare and unemployment recipients
Fort Wayne News ^ | 03/26/2009 | Fort Wayne News

I read an article on Fox News this morning that shows several states considering random drug testing of recipients of food stamps, unemployment benefits and welfare. If you think about it, why not? It’s no different that getting drug tested at your place of employment, as pointed on below.

“Nobody’s being forced into these assistance programs,” said Craig Blair, a Republican in the West Virginia Legislature who has created a Web site — notwithmytaxdollars.com — that bears a bobble-headed likeness of himself advocating this position. “If so many jobs require random drug tests these days, why not these benefits?”

Blair points out on this web site, “Nowhere in our state or U.S. constitutions is it mandated that financial assistance is a right.” He also points out that employers pay unemployment insurance in West Virginia, just as they do here in Indiana. The fact is, if you’re unemployed and looking for work, you have to be drug free to get most jobs, so why not unemployment benefits?

I wonder if that drug test will include nicotine. What is a pack of cigarettes, now? $5? Pack a day, $150/mo?
Welfare agencies could always draw the line at passing out food stamps and cash assistance to people who burn $150 a month.
There are work requirements. Physically fit people have to look for employment in order to get benefits, don’t they?
Nothing says physical unfitness like smoking!
Therefore I suspect nicotine will be a target.

Yes, nicotine will undoubtedly be a target. In fact it will be the ONLY target should this legislation actually pass muster with the left. After all, heroin, meth, cocaine...those are “illnesses”. But cigarettes! Why everybody knows only evil, filthy untouchables smoke cigarettes. Let’s wipe them from the face of the earth, while providing our tax dollars to that poor coke addict in the corner. And if he should smoke too, well it’s only part of the perverse doings of our unfeeling society that caused it!

Lets see, I’ve been continually employed in the private sector for 34 years. In that time each of my employers have paid into a supposed “unemployment insurance” program which is government mandated. I’ve paid in vast amounts to purchase this insurance.

Now, (assuming I were to acutally need the insurance because the economy has tanked mostly due to that same governments malfesence) I will be asked to go tinkle in a cup to get my money back.

I don’t think so. I also am sure I’m not going to give up cigars simply to pass said test. Not sure what I will do, but play along with these fascists is not one of them.

Federal government employees (including military) are subject to these mandatory drug tests to maintain employment. There's no reason welfare recipients shouldn't be subject to them as well.

If I can lose my job for using drugs, they should lose their generous benefits as a condition of their "employment". If they are drug users, some of these taxpayer paid benefits are feeding their illegal drug habits.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander!
