Louis V. Galdieri ("GOP Needs New Ideas, Can't Live in the Past," letters, March 12) doesn't speak for me when he assumes that my age group won't value the legacy of Ronald Reagan. I was born six months after Reagan was inaugurated in 1981, nonetheless I am deeply inspired by his quotes and watch his speeches on YouTube. Through his understanding of our unchanging human nature, Reagan saw limited government as the best path to economic growth.
Reagan was proud to be an American and espoused the principles on which our country was founded: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that each individual human being, not the government, should decide his own destiny.
These are not new ideas. They are simple, time-tested principles that we Americans are accustomed to living out every day. They appeal to men and women of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of the age of the messenger. We desperately need to be reminded of them as government increasingly intrudes on our lives and the failed doctrines of socialism are threatening our freedoms.
Ronald Reagan, the honorable American president who defended individual liberty and scorned collectivism, is the ideal teacher.

Thanks for posting this Mary81; if you hadn’t, I might not have seen it. I’m glad to see Ronald Reagan still has young admirers like Mary Ellen Owens. Let me be clear. Reagan was a very effective, very strong leader. I just don’t think he was the great philosopher of liberty he’s been made out to be, at least if you use the word “philosopher” in a non-trivial way.
