Study: Wages rose after immigration raids

Published: March 19, 2009 at 8:11 AM

WASHINGTON, March 19 (UPI) -- Wages and employment increased for legal workers after raids on six Swift & Co. meat-packing plants in several U.S. states in 2006, a study indicated.

Noting that the plants raided were back in production within five months, Jerry Kammer of the Center for Immigration Studies said there was "good evidence" that the number of U.S.-born workers increased, concluding that the plants "could operate without the presence of illegal workers," The Hill reported.

The non-partisan center examined what happened after raids on Swift & Co. facilities in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas and Utah, in which 1,300 undocumented workers were arrested. Another 400 workers without authorization to work in the United States were found through company screening.

The study estimated about 23 percent of the plants' employees weren't authorized to work in the United States, the Washington publication said.

Swift didn't provide information about how its workforce changed, Kammer said, adding that the meat-packer also recruits a large number of refugees who are legal immigrants.

"At the four facilities for which we were able to obtain information, wages and bonuses rose on average 8 percent with the departure of illegal immigrants," Kammer said.

Kammer said Swift used pay increases and signing bonuses to staff the plants after the raids.

Illegal immigration foes have been saying for years that illegal aliens suppress the wages. A man used to be able to make a decent wage working construction but now illegal aliens are so prevalent on construction sites that you will be lucky to get $10/hr.

Illegal aliens are all about depressing wages of Americans and also votes for Democrats.

Juan Williams on Hannity last night claimed that these illegal immigrants are a boon to the economy, they create jobs and revive areas of the city that have been abandoned.

Prepare to hear a lot more of this narrative in preparation for amnesty.

Illegal aliens are all about depressing wages of Americans and also votes for Democrats.

This is the one-two punch that continues to damage this country.

Depressed Wages: Entire industries love this and don't want their supply of illegals interrupted.

Democrat Voters: Democrats love this and exploit it to get elected and then re-elected. Spanish language media works as a fifth column in this country to fleece the illegals and foment fear by producing propaganda disguised as news.

“Illegal immigration foes have been saying for years that illegal aliens suppress the wages.”

That is why the construction industry paid so much for lobbyists to press the immigration “reform.”

Actually, the construction industry wants to keep the status quo of turning a blind eye to illegals because a LEGAL immigrant would command a higher wage. It is the stupid liberals who want 12 million permanent Rat voters who are pushing for it.

The Libertarians need to read this and quit trying to remove our already weak immigration laws.

I searched for this story before I posted, sorry.

I used the exact same title in the search field and it didn't come up, what the heck?

I seriously doubt that, especially if you live in Florida. Any real business person would tell you that Supply-and-Demand comes first.
Right now, there is a glut of housing and is a buyer's/renter's market. Actually, the way I see it, you'll have to lower your "rent", as your current renters will probably have to move out . . . .

I guess search is finicky - I’ve had the same thing happen.

No problem - someone who missed the first two will see this one.
