Gun Advocates Ready for Battle on Federal Assault Weapons Ban
FOXNews.com ^ | March 17, 2009 | Joshua Rhett Miller

Posted on 03/18/2009 6:38:22 PM PDT by neverdem

Attorney General Eric Holder is using the drug violence in Mexico to "confuse and mislead" Americans in an attempt to reinstate the expired federal assault weapons ban, gun advocates say.

Get ready for a gunfight.

Holder revealed his intention to reinstate the ban last month while announcing more than 700 arrests in connection with a crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the United States.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to re-institute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder said. "I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum."

Holder said reinstating the ban would decrease the flow of guns from the U.S. into Mexico. He declined to offer a timeframe for any re-implementation; Justice Department spokesman Matt Miller also declined comment on Tuesday.

But Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, told FOXNews.com that Holder's "argument in general is bizarre."

"It's a delusion to say that diminishing the Second Amendment in America is somehow going to stop these ruthless drug cartels in Mexico."

LaPierre called on Holder and Justice Department officials to uphold existing laws and focus on increasing enforcement along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border, rather than consider additional legislation...

Outside of high capacity magazines “assault” weapons are no more dangerous that “sporting” weapons. I also wonder if the AG has thought that weapons may be coming up through Central America. Doesn’t he think FARC and the Colombian Drug Cartels may be in the arms business?

What a load of BS.

They can do anything they want. They're the government. With a subpoena, it's even quasi-legal.

I always make the point to my Democrat brother in law - "Who's the only organization in the world that can take everything you have, or ever hope to have, and get away with it, and suffer NO consequences? The Mafia? NO! It's the government. And there's nothing you can do about it."

He regularly ignores me, of course.

“Can the government force organizations to give up their subscription lists???”

Yes they can with a subpoena if they want. Also they can subpoena mail order billing documents (ammo, reloading, and firearms parts Internet sales).

Think insurgent warfare in the US that will dwarf anything you might have seen in Iraq.

You think they will stop at an assault weapons ban?? I don’t. They are going to try to ram it all down our throats at once. And, it will be worse than most of us expect.

Obama will seek these 4 elements in a gun bill

1. An expanded HR 45, gun owner licensing. All gun owners will have to have these licenses, even owners of facilimie weapons (AKA Airsoft and BB). Licenses will only be granted if the records of the applicant are clean (This includes misdemeanors from decades ago). Licensees will be required to hold $1 million in liability insurance. Possession of otherwise permitted weapons (See #3) without license is a felony.

2. Ammunition accountability... All ammo will be required to be microstamped and will be taxed $1/round. All non stamped ammo will be required to be turned in or thrown away. Possession of non-marked ammo is a felony. This part of the act also bans “Cop Killer” bullets.

3. Expanded “Assault Weapons” ban— This includes most all semiauto rifles, anything that can be “Bump Fired”, Semiauto handguns, and Semi-auto shotguns. It also includes pump-action shotguns and “Sniper Rifles” AKA your deer rifle. The AWB will also require people with “Prebans” to register their guns as Machine Guns, and that the tax stamp will go up to $10,000 per weapon, or turn it in without compensation...

4. Expansion of the Lautenbach amendment: Removes “Domestic Violence” as disqualifier to gun ownership, inserts any misdemeanor as disqualifer... Anyone with a misdemeanor on their record will be prohibited from owning a firearm. This includes DUI and traffic offenses, and offenses decades ago.

Finally, this bill will revoke and ban Concealed Carry and the permits.

Don’t forget that Iran has been meddling down south, also.

Gee...I don’t know, Eric.....

This is such BS. The drug lords are getting the weaponry (US type) from corrupt elements of the Mexican military and through foreign sources, theft, etc.

RPG’s, Grenades, full auto rifles. Yeah, you can get them in any US gunshop.

Holder is throwing a red herring.

Have you read the first link in comment# 1? I guess you haven’t. I put links in comment# 1 for a reason. 65 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have told Holder to take a powder.

I’d say “no”. If they did pull it off, it would be the end of the democrats in DC for 8-12 years.

HR 45-— Legislation pending. Could be attached to an AWB bill. Holder backs HR 45 attachment to AWB.

Insurance Requirement-— Comes from same area that Obama was a State Senator in IL. This could be a test case for it nationally, and could be attached to an AWB. Holder backs this.

Ammunition Accountability-— Legislaton pending in appromx 15 states. Included is CA, IL, NY, and DC. They want to go Federal. Could also be attached to AWB, and Holder backs this too.
