I suspect the socialist was, in fact, born in Hawaii. That's based on newspaper articles from the time that I've seen scanned into the Internet. That just proves someone called the paper and announced the birth.

That just proves someone called the paper and announced the birth. Actually it proves that someone filed a birth record/certificate with the state. That would be easy for his Mother and Grandmother to have done. the filing is what triggered the announcement, either by a particular hospital or by the parents/grandparents.
