Low-energy bulbs will cause agony for thousands of skin disorder sufferers, doctors warn
The Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 14th March 2009 | David Derbyshire

Posted on 03/13/2009 5:18:04 PM PDT by fanfan

The phasing out of traditional light bulbs could cause misery for thousands who have light-sensitive skin disorders, medical experts warned yesterday.

Dr Robert Sarkany said some low-energy bulbs gave vulnerable people painful rashes and swelling.

He backed calls by patient groups for the Government to give medical exemptions for those at risk.

The warning comes as British shops start to clear their shelves of traditional bulbs, which are being replaced by more energy-efficient versions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

**How do you know when it burns out? ***

There is just enough light leakage around the bottom of the door to let me know it is on——at night.

Philips has basically admitted that they wrote the "laws" covering CF bulbs because they're more profitable for them. They then sent their lobbyists around and bought-and-paid-for legislatures rubber stamped it. >

Is it impossible to develop more efficient incandescent bulbs? Or has both 1% inspiration and 99% persperation gone out of style?

Have you thought of drilling a large hole that shines toward your vantage point like maybe a 1” or 3” hole covered with glass?

When I think of heating a dog house with a bulb (if that ever comes up for me) I plan to put a tiny window in it so that I can see the light easily. If the angles were wrong a small angled mirror would reflect the light from a tiny hole and the shiny surface would give the same information at a glance.

Why is any govt dictating which light bulbs we use? Talk about tyranny.

Actually I think this nonsense began with Wally World. Wally World likes smaller inventory and if they have a policy that makes the GreenieBots happy that seals the deal for them. More of these bulbs means fewer sold for a higher price. Thus lower inventory and usage of shelf space a kick which Wally World has been on for several years now for those who haven't noticed. What Wally wants the rest of the market unfortunately must follow. I rememeber reading the Wally World press release of them patting themselvees on the back for pushing the new type bulbs.

This leaves the comapnies making them with a choice. Make them for their largest retailer {Wally World} or other places like Lowes or Home Depot etc. Wally wins that fight most of the time with a few exceptions where companies stand up to them and say no. Notice as well the bulb factories have left or are leaving the U.S. about the time the push began.

For those buying the regular incandescents and stock piling like I am buy the long lasting brass plated base bulbs. They last longer or go to a lighting store and buy a case of long lasting bulbs. You'll likely get a better deal there if you can afford a case. The aluminum base bulbs don't last near as long. The brass base have bigger filaments as well because they are for commercial use. In bigger multistory buildings structural vibration is a major factor in using those type bulbs.

They sure appeared to show up at the party late. They didn’t seem to be getting on board like some of their competitors until recently.

In my area they only just started trying to price them cheap whereas Dixieline hit that market full bore many years ago in pricing and marketing.

We’ve picked up some fantastic LEDs ~ should last for years.

We were early adopters on some LED lighting for under the kitchen cabinets, a few years later they have dimmed down to almost nothing. Don't know what happened everything looks ok but all the lights are very dim now and out of warranty. They cast no beam at all and you have to look directly at them to even tell if they are lit.

When my neighbor needs to dispose of a used bulb, he puts it in a used McDonald’s cup, puts the lid back on, drives through the McDonald’s lot, and tosses the cup in their trash receptacle.

I should add that they were only turned on a few hours a day and not every day.

In my area they were the fist to have them out. Do a search on Walmart and the new bulbs. Their hands are all over it. Walmart is corporate liberal when it comes to Green issues. The new Super Store in my area is one example. They went overboard. The store is nearly impossible to shop in on a partly cloudy day due to the sun being behind the clouds. I also noticed that their so called energy saver reach in cooler lights stay on 24/7 now where they were going off and on all the time. Evidently they got their electric bill and realized that turning flouresents off and on actually uses more electricity. Here's one article on Wally Worlds push though. I did check, that push didn’t start until about 2007 which is why I posted as I did.

I have never heard grown men complain about a store like they do about Walmart, even the stores interior lighting displeases you.

The left hates Walmart and seems to be pretty good at spreading that hate.

I would like to see that evidence.

Are you sure that the lights being on aren’t so that the night shift can clean and stock the store?

Walmart is the most conservative large store around, that is why I boycott Costco and Home Depot.

I have never heard grown men complain about a store like they do about Walmart, even the stores interior lighting displeases you.

The store is less than a year old. It's a newer design. For daytime lighting it is almost solely skylight dependent. A bad idea in an area where Partly Cloudy is the general weather. IOW the clouds pass by blocking the sun and the place grows dark. This can happen several times a minute. On rainy days the lights do come on. But on partly cloudy there's light then dim.

I used to like Walmart but some of their policy as of late irks me. One is their inventory reduction policy which leaves fewer items on the shelves on any given day. It's a no win for them and shopper when they run out of fast turnover high demand items and give such items limited shelf space. They can't sell what they don't have but Bentonville can't comprehend that.

Next in the Super Stores they removed one shelf store wide. Again fewer items they once stocked. That means they loose a sale & I go elsewhere. Next is the dropping of name brands who don't meet their pricing demands. Wylers powdered is an example. Cheaper than others and made in USA now gone from their shelves. Herbox Bullion cubes which was their only non MSG brand is another. Do you like Tyson meats? All their raw fresh meat is Tyson I saw it coming out of the boxes when they were stocking it. Try to go buy a yard sign there they likely won't have it. Or even common hardware items they used to have. Their outdoor power tools? Forget them. Look up the man who said No To Walmart. To meet Walmarts pricing the manufactures sacrifice quality. I'll never buy another Poulan brand because of that.

As of late I'm finding fewer and fewer items I buy on a routine basis available in the neighborhood Wally World. Worse & highly agitating is their musical chairs game in stocking year round everyday items in any given department especially stuff like tooth paste. Why move it every blasted week? Put something some place and leave it there for a while how about it. No it's simply a ploy to make you look at other items searching for it.

The Walmart I do frequent now if needed is a smalleer and older non Super Store and actually it has more selection than their newer Super Stores. I'm sure the great minds in Bentonville will take care of that too soon enough.

One last thing that hurt Walmart shoppers the most was elimination of layaway. Why? Walmart targets working middle class, lower middle class, fixed income retired, & working poor as their customers. Yet where they were making money on cash sales with layaway that wasn't enough for them. They wanted everyone to have a Walmart credit card. Keep in mind this was targeting those least able to afford it much like the banking crisis of today. I bought high dollar items on layaway especially at Christmas time. Now I shop elsewhere at Christmas as much as possible. The local mom and pop gift shop loves layaway business. They know that when you come in to make a payment you might buy something else while there too. In short Walmart is far from it's beginnings. Unfortunately in my area there isn't much of another choice on a lot of stuff.

I would like to see that evidence.

A fluorescent on start up draws considerable current as the gases in the bulb must be heated. Once started they use less power. An incandescent bulb however uses the same amount of power starting as it does working. What I'm saying is this. If you leave a room where an incandescent light burning and turn it off you instantly save money even if for 30 seconds. If you leave a room with fluorescent lighting and plan to return within the hour you'll save more money leaving it on.

Are you sure that the lights being on aren’t so that the night shift can clean and stock the store?

Yes I'm sure. It's the reach in coolers where frozen foods are. At first they would go on and off every time someone walked by and past no matter the time of day or night I was there. Now they stay on all the time. I'd say replacing a few electronic ballast {meaning the lighting unit} also sent a message as well.

It is called obsessing, you will go to any lengths to smear Walmart. You have many posts attacking Walmart going back for years and years, and always pretending that it is spontaneous and fresh, as though it is a new shortcoming that as a fan you just discovered, and isn’t it sad.

You are clearly one of these anti Walmart crusaders and have been for many years making up all this gibberish that you post is the clue, You can’t expect people not to see through your BS.

Anybody gonna buy a used car from Wal-Mart?
Well I can see some real bad problems with it. First thing is they will have an associate go through and turn on each car radio to full blast which upon turning the ignition switch will get you confused. But to even get that far you will be bombarded with 15 minutes of I need a memeber of management to unlock the car. Upon driving it off the lot an announcement will be made security item car leaving lot. Then an alarm will go off at the entrance followed by an associate wanting to imediately do a full search of the vehicle & ask for your reciept ect.

No I can’t see it working. I’m certain Walmart in it’s tradition of ever increasing intrusivness and rudeness will make it a shopping nightmare as well.

Yeah, those hard numbers are so much less reliable than the 100 (fewer?) items you counted at WalMart. If you’re going to make such a silly claim you should try to have actual facts to back you up. Otherwise you’ll be mocked.
Now if you mean 100 items per department you might well be on to something. But I can go into toys and find close to 100 items made in China, as well as Electronics, likely automotive, clothing, housewares and appliances, and possibly hardware as well. So what does that leave us for the most part? Food! More recent purchases at Wally World. A Hamilton Beach toaster Made in China. A DVD made in Taiwan, a fiber optic Christmas Tree Made in China, air filter/purifier Made in China, dolls for gifts Made in China, Stuffed animals made in China, Portable Battleship game Made in China, portable CD Player Made in China, Liberty Overals Made in China, portable air compressor Made in China, Oh I could name a bunch of recent purchases Made in China these were but a few of them. I just gave you 9 of them off the top of my head.

Like I said I go by what I see and what I READ ON LABELS of what I buy. If I can find a Made in USA item I buy them. Despite what so called statistics state you will be very hard pressed to go into a store and not come out with at least 50% of what you buy made in China. That includes all the Big Box Mart Stores as well. What doesn’t come from SE Asia and China comes from Mexico another beloved Bush blind spot.

Hey remember those really annoying alarms they used to have in Electronics that went off every time someone entered? You remember them. They used to make everyone walk past them to enter and leave the department. Your reading the post of the person who complained enough to get them removed. Yes Walmart is too blasted loud and it simply doesn't need to be. Look at Target. They want to page an employee they simply radio them. Pages are rare. In general when a PA System inside a store makes normal conversation between two people impossible then it's too loud.

Walmart has slacked off somewhat on the Member of Management paging since 2002. Back then every single employee act it seemed required one to be there. Now mainly it's unlocking the gun room which is understandable. The security item leaving where-ever announcements are gone now as well. They were also highly annoying and unnecessary. The door alarms? I ignore them and keep walking out.

The second example? Thank you for reminding about another complaint. Walmart no longer carries Dickies short sleave Coveralls. I buy them at Tractor Supply {actually usually Walls brand} Cheaper than what Wally sold them for anyway.

And let's remember I said in your second example it applied to all Big Box Marts.

Like I said I go by what I see and what I READ ON LABELS of what I buy. If I can find a Made in USA item I buy them. Despite what so called statistics state you will be very hard pressed to go into a store and not come out with at least 50% of what you buy made in China. I post about Walmart because there are no other stores comparable to them to give them competition in my area. I don't count Target as they never sold nothing I ever wanted anyway. Walmart is beginning to look like them merchandise wise more and more. Even K-Mart had to realize they were biting the hand that fed them. Their change unfortunately has came too late. Unless Wally wakes up Walmart will in about a decade or so be what K-mart is today. I'd love to see them face a strong run for their money. I think I've about given up on their grocery department as well. I was doing about 90% of my grocery business there. But a trip into Ingles the other night I saw food items in there I hadn't seen in a long time at Wally World.

I have been reading your posts all this time, you are obsessed with them, post after post, page after page.

You manage to attack them from every angle, no matter what the topic you manage to work in a casual or elaborate dig at Walmart.

You are an activist, the obsession is so fascinating that I’m going back in to read more.

At least you can say that you have been here since the sixties! Look at the dates on these posts. I saved a picture for you so if any one ever complains that you have only been here since 1999 you can mess with their heads.

More to the construction that probably caused the cave in. Cesspools are homemade. That means someone probably used tin or something to cover the top where a septic tank has a concrete cap.

A cesspool is not the same construction as a septic tank. A septic tank has a concrete bottom and is usually a one piece poured concrete mold. A cesspool has no bottom and often made of concrete blocks with some of them turned to point outward for drainage purposes. In short it’s walls are as dangerous as the old cistern type wells. Most locations now outlaw cesspools from what I understand this sounds like one that was grandfathered in.

Let’s not ever forget that it is now the GOP justice department that has let her and Slick Willard still remain free to pursue their political dreams. That is the reality of it. The GOP can spin it and deny it but it’s the plain and simple truth. The “let’s move on” strategy has moved back home to haunt the GOP.

Oh my my you must be a manager of one LOL. Likely an assistant manager with dreams of one day being one LOL. No actually I don't post that much about Wally World if you look at number of Wally World post compared to number of post I made.

Look most of what I know about the store such as the top shelf being removed store wide was something the store managers themselves told me when I complained to them and asked why the sudden missing products. They understand it's hurting their business. But policy is made in Bentonville.

When one local Wally World Super Store got a corporate reduction make over you heard many customers cussing trying to find their goods to buy and get out. Doing away with crafts was another bad idea. I heard many women upset over that one including my wife.

I can go there and buy 38 special ammo cheap though and without hassle I give them that much credit.

Fact is I spend $500 a month there or rather I did. I've found myself more and more having to go elsewhere to find what I came there for. Like I said too it's odd that the smaller and older stores are better stocked than Super Stores are and they generally are cheaper as well. For example Cesar's dog food at Super Wally $.80-.88 at the smaller one $.72 tops. Milk Bone dog biscuits were even over a dollar cheaper on a large box at Ingles and at their regular everyday price. I went there because Wally had sold out. The dog has to eat too.

No, you are the one with the obsession, not me. I only discovered them a few years ago.

You have years and years and years of attacks of varying styles on Walmart, your posting history is saturated with them.

Sometimes your attacks are intense and focused, other times your attacks are folksy and casual, it depends on the audience and the subject of the thread.

This thread for instance was about light bulbs but your Walmart routine has covered a wide range of various avenues of criticisms.

I should mention that although I live in one of the largest cities in the United States and I live in Duncan Hunters district, in one of the few metropolitan areas that is largely republican.

We can’t get a Walmart Superstore because of your ilk. The lefties mix with the few weirdos and keep us from having that non union Superstore.

I have been in one during my lifetime and it is almost 800 miles from my house so good work to you and your lefty buddies.
