When something “jumps the shark”, it means that it has become irrelevant. It refers to when the Fonz jumped over a shark while on water skis on the tv show Happy Days. Most people agree this was when Happy Days was on its death bed.
It is a last desperate attempt for attention when all else has failed. It usually means you have fallen into the state of irrelevancy. It came from the final season of Happy Days when ratings where almost zero, they had the Fonz water ski jump a shark..
