A Father/Liberal Daughter Talk

Posted on 03/04/2009 2:05:28 AM PST by 4rcane

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words, redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

“Welcome to the Republican Party”?

I know, because people have told me that I am a bit doltic at times, but should that not read the opposition party?

Hey, I think the dems want equality despite performance?
I am not that stupid, good joke, wrong punchline.

Excellent...except if your liberal son or daughter is the one getting ‘liberal’ grades. I’m dealing with the same issue with 3 sons and the matter complicates itself further as I am a disabled [early retired] American who is now receiving and dependent upon [as I am constantly reminded] her Social Security benefits.

I know a young woman who is in her third year at an Ivy League college. I've had occaisional conversations with her since she was a high-school freshman.

I always enjoyed talking to her because she seemed really smart and also she seemed to sincerely belive in G-d. The first conversation I with her happened when she asked me to explain the difference between a liberal and a conservative (I should explain that her family is from another country).

The last two times I've had the chance to speak with her have been huge disappointments. She is now very reluctant to speak in specific terms about anything philosophical. She is very quick to label pretty much anything I say as "being judgmental." It's almost like that's something she's been taught to say to the non-cogniscenti. I'm really disapppointed in her, because I once thought of her as such a shining light. The light has been put out.

I've pretty much decided to avoid any further conversations with her. The reason is because I've turned over in my mind the response I'd like to give the next time she says I'm "being judgmental." I'd like to say this: "I'd call it being an adult. As an adult, I find it necessary to 'be judgmental' in order to survive, and in recent years I've come to enjoy it."

I know in my heart that I would not be able to deliver that little speech in a way that wouldn't come across as snarky, even though I truly wouldn't mean it that way. So I don't think I'll talk to her any more.

Aren’t those that say you are “being judgemental” guilty of being judgemental?

I have confronted the "judgmental" accusation before.

I ask them what they ate today.

I then follow with the question of them being judgmental in their decision of what to eat.

I have come to the conclusion that sometimes people need to be told things in a “Snarky” way...If you are already refusing to talk to her, then what do you have to lose? Sometimes you will be rejected outright, and yet sometimes, just sometimes, a little seed is planted....I rufuse to allow these people to silence me..

Simple say that being judgmental is not a bad thing. Someone who is judgmental will sometimes have good judgment, sometimes have bad judgment, but will never be someone who has no judgment.

A person with no judgment makes decisions based upon a whim, a passing fancy, or someone else's judgment. They don't think for themselves, they don't decide for themselves, and they can't discern that which is right and wrong for themselves.

Learning judgment is a very important lesson in life, and being a judgmental person is far superior to being someone who has never learned this skill and therefore has no judgment.

My wife used to pull this “judgemental” crap with me. It was simply an excuse to be able to do whatever she wanted with whomever she wanted without being called out for it.

We are ALL judgemental. Only a comatose isn’t. From food choices to life choices, we MUST judge what’s good from what’s bad.

The “you’re being judgemental” line is a CROCK. People who use it are dishonest and know they are doing wrong.
