Special Edition Wednesday, March 4, 2009 Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data. Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks. We have links, lots of them. March 4th is the 63rd day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar There are 302 days remaining in 2009.
The Gregorian solar calendar is an arithmetical calendar. It counts days as the basic unit of time, grouping them into years of 365 or 366 days; and repeats completely every 146,097 days, which fill 400 years, and which also happens to be 20,871 seven-day weeks. Of these 400 years, 303 have 365 days, and 97 have 366 days. This gives an average year length of exactly 365.2425 days, or 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes and 12 seconds. From the Radixionary

A tomato is not a vegetable. According to
A long, long time ago, in a university far far away, a student doing his masters degree oral examination was asked ``If you had to sum up in one word what calculus was all about, what would it be ?". The student proceeded by cramming as much material as possible in a two minute pep talk. Then the examiner responded ``Actually, I was only looking for the word limit". In case you're wondering, the student did get his degree. Limits are where Algebra ends and Calculus begins.

On this day 1985 War veterans returned to the "Bridge over the River Kwai" Pierre Boulle's novel, The Bridge Over The River Kwai, recounts the building of a wooden bridge by prisoners of war who were incarcerated at Kanchanaburi in Thailand. Although Pierre claims this is a fictional work, we believe that better than 90% of it is factual. The prisoners did exist, the camp existed, the bridge existed, the war existed, and the atrocities by the Japanese who forced the prisoners to labor and die at that location on that task were real. Pierre titled his book The Bridge Over The River Kwai; however, since the Thai word for "river" is "Kwai", his title literally reads The Bridge Over The River.
Begun in October 1942, using prisoner of war (POW) labour, it was completed and operational by early February 1943. |
