Woman Who Called for Help Assaulted By Police; Police Suing TV Station that Exposed Them
The Cleveland Leader ^ | 2/19/09

Check out the video below, where WKYC investigative reporter Tom Meyer spoke with Greg Steffey, whose wife, Hope Steffey called 911 after she was assaulted by her cousin. Things took a turn for the worst when the police arrived and treated Hope as the perpetrator. She was arrested, taken to jail, and subjected to a humiliating full-body strip search by both male and female officers, violating the sheriff department's own policy that a strip search be conducted by an officer of the same sex. Hope was then left naked in a cell for six hours. Included in the news segment was video footage of the strip search....

I'm not an attorney, but I had to study constitutional law for my degree.

If anything, the Constitution PROHIBITS the type of police forces we have now. They are the equivalent of “standing armies” used to control the citizenry, which were an anathema to our Founding Fathers.

When the modern police forces were first established in the mid-nineteenth century they were challenged as unconstitutional but, as we know, the courts decided differently.

“And they’d be doing it again and again without a single thing being done about it if not for video tape.”

That is the most alarming thing about all of this. How many other women have been similarly treated, but their assaults were not caught on videotape? If they did it to this woman, when they KNEW there was a camera involved (hell, one of the female officers is seen standing there filming the incident with a hand-held camera!), you just have to assume they’ve also done it when no one was filming it.

I’m not defending the officers, they should be punished for wrong-doing, but the news has already tried and convicted them.

Their own film did.

It reminds me of how many of the records that convicted the defendants at Nuremburg were made by the Nazis themselves, to document the "achievement" of making Europe Judenrein.

The news station’s legal staff should look into any applicable anti-SLAPP and anti-frivolous-lawsuit provisions and countersue if possible.

“I can guarantee that if you get batshit crazy drunk, get violent and make threats of self harm you will end up naked in a cell till you sober up.”

Bravo Sierra. I used to handle cases defending LEO against civil rights violations (42 USC 1983 cases). Suicide threats are not stripped and left naked in a cell. They are evaluated and then placed on suicide watch if warranted. And that means eyes on watching them, but they are not stripped naked. Their belts and shoelaces are removed, but that’s about it.

God help you if you were a Black Man in South Carolina in the 50s. Or a Jew, or a Catholic

Yep. One of the positive aspects of the political upheavals of the 1960s civil-rights movement was that it put those tendencies into remission for a while.

They are now coming back, and directed at pretty much anyone is isn't part of the politically connected class.

"If anything, the Constitution PROHIBITS the type of police forces we have now. They are the equivalent of “standing armies” used to control the citizenry, which were an anathema to our Founding Fathers."

Bingo, we have a winner.......Some would say that the 10th amendment grants such authority to the stated, but Article 4 Section 2 of the constitution guarantees the citizens of each state shall be entitled to all privileges and immunities of citizens in the several states. Additionally, Article 4 Section 4 guarantees to every state in this union a republican form of government, meaning that states cannot take away individual rights.

Looking to original intent we can see that police are probably unconstitutional: http://www.constitution.org/lrev/roots/cops.htm

“If it pans out as true, the entire department should be fired.”

Not just fired. They should all be imprisoned for rape.

“It looks more to me like an attempt by the police department to shut down any criticism of their ‘work.’”

No, it’s more likely the department’s attorney told them to keep their mouths shut, and that was good advice.

Midland County, TX. This was NOT a drill. This was how the Sheriff’s Dept. came to “visit” the FLDS compound.

The TV station should do a series of expose' stories on the PD. They should regularly report on this particular case, calling for the cops and their supervisors to be fired. If the chief does nothing they should call for the chief to be fired.

They should hold fundraising for attorney fees to sue the cops and the city.

They should call for the city and the council to look into the PD.

They should call for anyone else who has been abused by the PD in the last 3 years to come forward and tell their stories.

“Every day in this country.”

I am fully aware of the number of police abuse cases in this country, because it was my job to defend the LEO in the lawsuits that were brought.
