BERLIN: German police say 15,000 residents were evacuated from their homes during the night in a northern town as experts defused a World War II-era bomb.
Residents in parts of Celle were evacuated on Monday evening after the bomb was found on the grounds of an industrial property.
Explosives experts defused the 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) American bomb early Tuesday in an operation that lasted 35 minutes. People were then allowed back into their homes.
Though World War II ended more than six decades ago, it is still relatively common for unexploded Allied bombs to be found in Germany.
i did not read the article. was is a dropped bomb, or surplus?
I’m guessing it’s a dropped bomb that failed to go off. It was found buried.
Blame America. Typical. :o)
How fast is a 2,000 pound bomb traveling when it hits the ground after being dropped from 25,000 feet? How deep a hole can it dig for itself when it does not explode?
we did to the Axis, what we should have done to Iraq and still need to do to Iran. ‘SATURATION BOMBING’. there are probably thousands of our unexploded bombs left in Germany.
When the axis sued for peace, they were done...stick a fork in ‘em.
We wouldn’t have an existing problem with Iraq and Afganistan if we bombed them back to the stone age like we did to the axis. Smart bombs are the stupid way to go.
terminal velocity.
about 200mph is maximum from any height
Afghanistan was and is pretty much in the stone age already.
yeah your right. we should have hit egypt and saudi. thats where the 9/11 bombers came from.
We should have simply seized Saudi A’s oil fields. It would have broken the Wahhabis power. The Saudi Army is a joke.
Only two centuries?
Saturation bombing was to make sure specific targets were annihilated. Smart bombs and cruise missiles accomplish the same task today.

maybe, but the more important secondary effect was to destroy the will of the population. After being bombed back to the stone age, the people want out of the war. We did a good job of it.
By fighting a limited war, we are back in Vietnam in a no win situation.
we fought a limited war in vietnam. where you been?
The Barnes Wallis “Tallboy” and “Grand Slam” bvombs of WW-II were designed to reach supersonic speed if dropped from about 20,000feet.

I would suspect that your original figure is a pretty good ballpark figure.

The doctrine of bombing civilians to break their morale was a demonstrated failure in WWII on both sides. The Blitz only galvanised the population of Britain to fight harder, and strategic bombing failed to break the morale of the German people, and only made them more determined to fight harder. The German surrender only came about because the allied armies on the ground were occupying most of Germany and their position was hopeless.
In Vietnam, the US dropped more bombs on North Vietnam than were used by all sides during the whole of WWII, and that proved completely ineffective, so your hypothesis that bombing the crap out of civilians yielded positive results has absolutely no basis, but then I suspect that idea of being so “tough” and ruthless gives you the ‘feeling’ that something meaningful was and would be achieved when in actual fact it was if anything, counterproductive....
There was no shock and awe to it.
If you kill enough of them, they stop fighting.

Killing Japanese didn't bother me very much at that time... I suppose if I had lost the war, I would have been tried as a war criminal.

My solution to the problem would be to tell the North Vietnamese Communists frankly that they've got to drawn in their horns and stop their aggression or we're going to bomb them into the stone age.

That was the era when we might have destroyed Russia completely and not even skinned our elbows doing it.
