For what it's worth

No Boycott of Israeli Products

The Food Coop management would like to clarify and correct misinformation in the press about the possibility of a boycott on Israeli products. The Park Slope Food Coop is not boycotting Israeli products.

Not only has the Coop's membership not voted to boycott Israeli products, a boycott has not at this point even been submitted for discussion at our monthly General Meeting -- the place where these types of decisions are made. This issue is not on the agenda and will not be discussed at the February 24 GM. The Coop is a democratically governed organization of close to 15,000 members. Any one of those members can submit an item for discussion at our monthly General Meeting. Three Coop members have suggested in our newsletter -- in the "Letters to the Editor" section -- a boycott of Israeli products. However, again, no member has yet submitted this item for discussion at one of our monthly General Meetings. Non-members do not have a role in the Coop's decision-making processes nor can they participate at General Meetings. Furthermore, decisions of this nature are not made by staff members, but only by the members who are present at our monthly General Meetings. When and if this issue is ever submitted by a member for discussion, the members who chair the monthly General Meeting will encourage all Coop members in attendance to attempt a civil discussion.

For more information, see this February 20 article in "The Brooklyn Paper."
