Germany to ask for Opel bailout
Feb 22 2009 14:30

Berlin - Germany's new economy minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said in remarks published on Sunday he would lobby for Washington to rescue struggling GM's European unit Opel during a US visit in March.

Zu Guttenberg told Bild am Sonntag newspaper he had established an informal US-German working group with American Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and he would use his March visit to hold more meetings with key officials.

"It is indispensable that General Motors and Opel consider rapidly... how they want to keep jobs in an economically healthy way," he said of the two car makers.

Zu Guttenberg's remarks follow those of Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier who appealed for international help for Opel, which employs 26 000 workers in Germany.

News reports claim the German car manufacturer needs more than $4.2bn in public loan guarantees - nearly double the figure previously expected - and that it may go bankrupt if public assistance is not forthcoming.

....that’s not a bad looking car.

Both U.S. versions, the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, will be gone soon. Perhaps GM will still import a few under the Opel badge, like they did in the '60s.

BTW, the Saturn Aura, Pontiac G6 and Chevy Malibu are all variants of the Opel Vectra. Looks like the Malibu (the plainest-looking one of the bunch) will be the only one to be sold here, come 2011.

They’re made in the US. Pretty sure even the opels are made here. I don’t know what the opel plant in germany does to employ so many people. There must be some opels that are totally different from saturns.

Here are some "German Opels" The Insignia The Astra The Corsa The Senator and of course the good old Opel Manta :o) GM really screwed Opel...as they did with swedisch car manufacturer SAAB. I hope Opel will be saved by some of the other german carmakers like BMW or Volkswagen, would be a shame to see Opel die for the faults of GM.

One looks like a chevy aveo, which is actually built and designed by daewoo. ONe looks like the old oldsmobile alero.

I really doubt if any of the others are true opels either. except for the last one.

Mainly compact to mid-size models are made in Germany. The GT is imported from the US, the smallest one, the Agila is based on a Suzuki design and manufactured in Eastern Europe. The following models (among others) are made in Germany:

Opel Corsa - subcompact

Opel Astra - compact

Opel Zafira - compact MPV

Opel Insignia - mid-size

“One looks like a chevy aveo, which is actually built and designed by daewoo.”

The Corsa and all other Opel are designed in the Opel Design Center in Rüsselheim/Germany, Chevrolet adopted the origin design, adjusted it for the US market and called the car Aveo.

“I really doubt if any of the others are true opels either. except for the last one.”

What you mean with “true opels”? Dont you see the “Opelblitz” signs on the cars?
