From BeaverTails to bloopers (Obama in Ottawa)
Globe and Mail ^ | February 20, 2009 | Gloria Galloway and Josh Wingrove

He had us at merci.

Barack Obama's visit to Ottawa Thursday was a six-hour romance with a country eager to return his affections.

Indeed, the whole nation seemed weak in the knees.

It was easy to forgive the little slip at the beginning of an afternoon news conference when he started to explain what a “great pleasure it is to be in Iowa, er, Ottawa.”

How could we not adore him when he followed that faux pas with a mention of his Canadian brother-in-law and two Canadian staff members and declared: “I love this country and think that we could not have a better friend and ally.”

Royal visits to Canada don't attract anywhere near this sort of fawning press coverage. And the Queen is Canada's head of state.

This article is a disgrace to the Globe and Mail, even as a puff piece. It reads like an article about the latest teenage heartthrob in a girl's magazine.

Tiger Beat Canadian Edition? Nah, the Globe and Mail wishes it had Tiger Beat's journalistic gravitas.

I wonder if the Zero knows that Canada had an invitation to join the Confederaltion of States and turned it down? I also wonder if those on his staff from Canada are here legally or if anyone checked it out? Lastly, did he mention he was against NAFTA while he was up there?? Just a few questions from the peanut gallary.

Close. I read that the adoration demonstrations were organized by the usual left wing groups.

Lastly, did he mention he was against NAFTA while he was up there?

Nope. He said he loves free trade now.

On the controversial "Buy American" provision included in the U.S. stimulus package, Obama said he made clear that those measures will be consistent with Washington's obligations under the World Trade Organization and the North American Free Trade Act.

"I provided Prime Minister Harper an assurance that I want to grow trade, not contract it," Obama said.

I know it's pretty shocking that Obama would change his tune. Well, it would be shocking except everything he's ever said is lie. So it's par for the course.

I wonder if the troubled Bill Ayers ambassadorship to Canada was discussed?

a six-hour romance with a country

Speaking as a fellow Canadian, I found all the swooning unsettling.
The Iowa/Ottawa blunder will be good material for the next couple of days.

It is my personal belief taht you can explain much of the world with this kind of thinking.

Ottawa is in Canada. Iowa is one of the 58 states.

I was looking for a keychain and a snow globe for my daughters,” said the President, explaining that he was continuing a tradition, started during his election campaign, of picking up memorabilia at every place he visits.

Wonder if he is taking it out of their $1 per week allowance.

“What a great pleasure it is to be in Iowa, er, Ottawa.”

Imagine the reaction if Bush had said this.
