THE man accused of starting one of the deadly Victoria fires, which killed at least 21 people in Gippsland on Black Saturday, has failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing in Melbourne.
The hearing was held without 39-year-old Brendan Sokaluk. He was remanded in custody until a committal hearing, which will be held on May 25.
The man, who faces charges including arson causing death and possession of child pornography, can now be named after a court order banning publication of his name was lifted. However the order remains barring publication of his address or a photo of him.
A lawyer representing media outlets told the hearing to overturn the suppression order that no evidence had been called to say the man was in danger. He said murderers and pedophiles appeared in court every day and their names were not suppressed.

Why are they are so protective of him?

Failed to appear!? I guess I assumed he would have been in custody.

He is in custody - presumably a doctor decided he was too ‘ill’ to appear.

The “artist’s rendition” looked Indonesian. The surname appears Indonesian. “Bernard” isn’t very Indonesian, though.

The artists rendition was of a different suspect in a different fire.
I am looking as a picture of BS now (I can’t share it - it’s online but I don’t violate Australian court orders personally) and he doesn’t look Indonesian.

No, he’s in custody - just did not attend court.

Well, Brendan doesn’t sound like a Muslim name. I guess he isn’t a Muslim terrorist arsonist.

Sokaluk sounds Slavic to my ear; not generally a group that’s fond of Muslims. I’d be more inclined to think it’s a lone nut case than part of a terrorist conspiracy, but it’s just my initial reaction.
To: naturalman1975
So far he does sound like a common garden variety weirdo with a penchant for fire.
