A Redesigned Penny for Your Thoughts
mediabistro.com ^ | FEB 12, 2009 | n/a

We once knew someone who was so frustrated by pennies that he promptly disposed of any that he received. We couldn't relate. But perhaps the anti-penny pincher will reconsider now that the coin has gotten a makeover to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The first redesigned penny in 50 years enters circulation today. It features a log cabin on the tails side, emblematic of Lincoln's Kentucky roots and designed by Richard Masters. And the fun doesn't stop with log cabins (it never does)! That's just the first of four new designs to look out for on 2009 pennies. The other three depict Lincoln's formative years in Indiana (a rail-splitting Abe designed by Charles Vickers), his professional life in Illinois (designed by Joel Iskowitz), and his presidency in Washington, D.C. (designer Susan Gamble's poignant scene of a half-finished Capitol dome). A new design will be issued every three months, which means that you have a new penny to look forward to every quarter.

I save all my pre- 1982 pennies, real all copper pennies, they are worth more as scrap metal right now per weight.

“In God We Trust” is missing.

I think the “heads” image stays the same. IN GOD WE TRUST is on there.

No it is not missing. It is on the front.

Someone might want to speak with the designer of the third coin from the left.

My mistake - I thought the “head” side was the current penny.

I dunno man. Nice art, I like them, BUT>>>>>

Pennies I do not think justify their existance anymore.

The time alone counting them out when you get change back is a waste. Just round stuff off to a nickel, or maybe better yet a dime and be done with the nickel too.

It’s just worth so little. Is there any advantage considering time wasted across the nation counting these nearly worthless pennies? Producing them and running them all through the change counting machines?

People won’t even pick them up off the ground!

Honor Lincoln on some other coin I say.

Well past time to retire the penny.

I didn’t realize the possible double entendre until after I posted (re: from the left)

Regardless, a committee must be convened to investigate this.
This is a clever but exposed affront to the Republican President!

I propose a tin half penny made in the likeness of 0 in reparation.

(points for ear spread when put on RR tracks... it if won’t derail the train)

I would agree.

We have not pennies overseas at AAFES. They are too expensive to ship.

While overseas I do not miss them.

Here in New Zealand the smallest coin is $0.10 and the smallest bill is $5.

We did away with the $0.01, $0.02 and $0.05 coins, and the $1 and $2 bills progressively since about 1990.

The $1 and $2 bills were replaced with bronze coins, everything else was simply done away with.

When we did away with pennies we went to something called “Swedish Rounding” to round our prices up-or-down to the nearest five cents. It was a jolly nuisance! The “Swedish Rounding” formula was next-to-impossible to remember.

Therefore America, proceed with caution. Speaking personally, I like pennies: you may post me as many of your pennies as you want. I will happily accept them all!

Sounds like something a government would do. Anybody else would just price stuff in increments of 10 cents.

“Honor Lincoln on some other coin I say.

Serious post. Keep the penny in honor of Lincoln and what it takes to make a dollar, 100 pennies.

It seems that government forgets and as has been said (para) ‘before you know it, we’re talking real money’.

It is still our money, don’t give 4 of 5 cents away for personal ease (put it in a charitable receptacle if the penny burdens you, no offense intended)

(millions > billions and now trillions). What next quad drillions?

For context, or argument/discussion, a program was made to slide off 1/1000 of a penny from each transfer. Over what course of time would this be considered substantial to be considered worthy?

Again, no offense intended.

“Why, does the “log” bother you?”

I have respect for President Lincoln.

I didn’t state it as you did and perhaps that is reason enough?

Not to be confrontational, but if I’m ‘bothered’, it’s by the possible depiction/interpretation and possible dis-respect.

You could always revalue the coinage.
