CONTROLLED burning would be declared a key national threat to biodiversity under a new proposal before government that has been slammed as dangerous to life and property.
While Environment Minister Peter Garrett yesterday gave Victoria carte blanche to do all it needed to control its deadly bushfires, without review by federal environment laws, it emerged he will be asked next year to decide whether prescribed burning to reduce fuel loads puts plants and animals at risk.
A Department of Environment spokeswoman confirmed yesterday it had received a public submission to list controlled burning as a "key threatening process" - the same category that applies to climate change, land clearing and feral cats, pigs and foxes.

This is absurd- fire is part of the ecology and the main reason wildfires are so devastating is that there aren’t enough of them- instead of a few small fires every season, fuel is allowed to build up until a firestorm is ignited. Controlled burning is just running the natural process in a more predictable manner.
In other words: Liberals still haven't learned their lesson.
Wasn’t there a controversy over this same issue a year or two ago in Tahoe?

It would seem that a firestorm is VASTLY more destructive to the biodiversity of an area than the much smaller, control-burn intentionally set blazes that are restricted in scope and time, which gives the vulnerable biological specimens opportunity to escape to an adjacent area that is NOT burning, an escape that is not available during a massive firefront.
What is counterintuitive about that?
