In another thread, some Australian said they already have 70,000 volunteers, but need some experienced fire chiefs to help organize and coordinate their efforts - so that’s what they asked us for.

Honestly, at this point, we don’t need any more strong backs - there are 60,000 volunteer firefighters in Victoria, and other states have similar numbers. We can put as many firefighters on the ground as we need to.

What we need - and what the US is sending - is additional people to help with the logistic support that all those firefighters need.

At some point, we may be asking for specialist firefighter units from overseas to do more specific jobs that need special skills but the ‘general’ body of firefighting can be met from local resources.
