CELL THIEVES RIDING RAILS (Bloomberg's New York)
NY Post ^ | 1/27/09 | TOM NAMAKO

Straphangers better hold on to more than bars in the subway.

Crooks are grabbing snazzy cellphones right out of the hands of unsuspecting riders, NYPD Transit Bureau Chief John Hall said yesterday.

Criminals are targeting commuters who become engrossed on their phones while standing near subway doors.

"The door opens up, the snatch or grab is made, then they're right out the door, on to the platform, then gone," Hall said.

It is really, really important, when you are out-and-about, to ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS.

People who get robbed, mugged, or assaulted are almost invariably not paying attention right up to the very moment of attack. This inattentiveness is one of the triggers that Bad Guys look for in a potential victim. If their victim is aware, they’re not going to get away with it!

Always make eye contact with everybody. Always. Don’t stare them down particularly, but don’t keep your gaze aimed at the ground or the store window either.

And turn your jolly cellphone off when you are walking or riding. Nobody is so important that they need to be contactable 24x7. Not even the President.

This problem could be significantly thwarted by the implantation of cell phone devices firmly in our craniums.

This is the 2nd story in the past few days about crime worsening in NYC since, oh, say about January 20th.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is a connection to that date somewhere?

I wonder how things are in the other megalopolis areas of the blue states?

Why blame Bloomberg? This is New York. This stuff’s been happening for decades there.

Giulani cleaned up NYC. After taking office, Bloomberg ordered a cutback in street crime arrests as a way to placate the liberals who despised Rudy’s crackdowns. Now it’s on its way back to the cesspool days thanks to Mayor Mike.

Maybe there wouldn’t be as much of a problem if people didn’t see those phones as status symbols and parade them in front of everyone else. This reminds me of Cadillacs and satellite dishes outside of shotgun houses. ;0)

Somehow the criminal is excused because others have something he wants?

Maybe there wouldn’t be such a problem if people didn’t always excuse the criminal and put the blame where it belongs.

These acts of cowardice would not exist in an armed society.

Missed the whole point didn’t you. Nobody is excusing anyone. Thieves are everywhere. Most people have sense enough not to dangle very expensive belongings in front of people. I am sure the thieves appreciate such easy pickings. ;0)

How does one use the phone without pulling it out, and thus "parading" it ?

And it's not the owner's fault that other people see his phone as a status symbol. How could he possibly have any influence in what other people, unknown to him, choose to see as a status symbol ?

Do you think the people that buy the most expensive phones have any other reason? Do you think most people even know how to use the whiz bang applications? The only difference between grown ups and children is the price of their toys. ;0)

Classic projection on your part, since you have no way of knowing what their motivations might possibly be, other than by assuming theirs are like yours.

Darn, you got me there. A new term “Classic projection”. I need to remember that one.
How smart would you consider a person that pulls $500 out of their pocket and holds it up for all around him to see?

If he was going to talk on it.... I guess he'd be pretty dumb, but these are phones. You can't leave them hidden, nor talk to people on them through your pocket.

. Anyway, you're just blaming the theft on the victims, not the actual thieves; and justifying it by implying that they are somehow to blame because they only want those fancy phones to show off.

I think that's a classic example of liberal projection.

I was in NYC this past weekend, and noticed a significant deterioration from what Guiliani had achieved. I saw a lot more trash by the roadside, and the “homeless” were clearly back in force.

So, A person would be pretty dumb if someone steals $500 and not dumb if someone steals an expensive cell phone worth at least that much. I understand now. ;0)

Darn, another big phrase. I need to remember that one also.
