Obama 'orders Pakistan drone attacks' - another media report
Times Online ^ | January 23, 2009 | Tim Reid in Washington

Posted on 01/24/2009 1:27:32 AM PST by NoPrisoners

"Missiles fired from suspected US drones killed at least 15 people inside Pakistan today, the first such strikes since Barack Obama became president and a clear sign that the controversial military policy begun by George W Bush has not changed.

Security officials said the strikes, which saw up to five missiles slam into houses in separate villages, killed seven "foreigners" - a term that usually means al-Qaeda - but locals also said that three children lost their lives..."

Do you think we’ll see headlines tomorrow calling him a baby killer?

The drone-bombing over Pakistan will likely be ordered to a halt within two weeks. I can’t see this current government agreeing to a program of aggressiveness with Pakistan. It hurts the image of Obama in the Middle East...and he can’t afford it.

The fact that this one was allowed to happen was kind of a shocker for me.

From the article - "...Obama has made Afghanistan his top foreign policy priority and said during his presidential campaign that he would consider military action inside Pakistan if the government there was unable or unwilling to take on the militants."

The trouble is that we have no idea if obama ordered the strikes or not. However, he had been getting intelligence briefings, and the Office-of-the-President-Elect was very active. My guess is that he was at least aware of the attacks.

I think this is all about positioning, setting the tone--it's very manipulative, which is so much a part of politics and even human relations. Obama is basically walking into the room and punching someone so as to give the impression that he CAN.

The problem is, when someone does that, it leaves the impression that you are capable of repeating that and doing much more. In W's case, he got so much static because everyone believed that if we were messed with, he would attack.

In Obama's case, though, I think he's doing it to create a false impression, and he's too clever by half. He is so confident that he believes he can outwir everyone's expectations. By killing fifteen here and thirty or one hundred here and there early on, combined with his Gitmo and "torture" policies, he's trying to create the impression that he is just as capable of delivering an ass whuppin as Bush but he has a "UN-friendly" side.

He is doing this now so he has cover for when he pulls us out of Iraq and presses on in Afghanistan.

It could work. Just because I can't stand the guy doesn't mean I hope it doesn't. But it depends on knowing what your opponent thinks, and what he thinks of you. It could very well lead to more "testing" i.e. terrorists trying to sneak things onto planes not to destroy them but to see if it can be done, suicide attacks, etc.

At this stage, that not knowing is a new president's biggest weapon. But personally, I don't think his previous decades on the planet are meaningless. He hasn't become some kind of hawk. Maybe the daily briefings he's been getting have convinced him to try to create that impression. But...I don't know.

Where’s the due process? Did we even try to bring our allies onboard, or did we act unilaterally?

It’s certainly baffling to me. I just don’t understand the fine points of political maneuvering. It’s like an intense game of chess and I was never good at that game either.

"Are you now opposed to the war on terrorism?"

Absolutely NOT! But my disgust and loathing for this administration has me already ill to my bones.

However, if zero did order the strikes, and civilians were killed in the process (including babies and children), then where is the outrage from the Left? Where is the coverage???

More importantly, after only a few days in office, how could he have found the time to consult with world leaders, who were likely not expecting any military action?

This is why I wrote "inept and inexperienced".

Yep, he'll pull the drones back here to be used on USSA citizens. New Obombus excutive order: "pay your work privilege tax to me or I blow your house up"

New markings on the side of the drone; IRS COLLECTIONS

Oh no, not Pock-ee-ston! We haven’t even declared war on Pock-ee-ston. Someone call Amnesty International House of Pancakes or something.
