Schwarzenegger could learn from Obama's share-the-pain message

Schwarzenegger could learn from Obama's share-the-pain message George Skelton, Capitol Journal January 22, 2009 From Sacramento -- I hope Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger listened closely from his choice seat. Because President Obama's inaugural address was a stark reminder of what has been missing from political discourse in California: the notion of individual sacrifice for the common good.

Not just share-the-wealth sacrifice. But share-the-pain across the entire economic spectrum -- the pain of sharply reduced public services for the poor, higher taxes for the rich and both afflictions for the middle-class.

It's the only cure for a sick state government before it further infects the failing California economy by virtually shutting down, except for making basic payments to schools and cutting checks for bond holders. Other than that, the state will be forced to pay with IOUs -- including tax refunds -- and halt more construction projects.

Raising taxes sure worked well in 1932- at least if your name was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

How do you feel about those poor ppl who have to share the pain because some Democrat Congressmen instructed Fannie & Freddie to buy mortgages that couldn't be paid?

A lot of those wallstreet bankers got screwed by the process, too.

Screw the poor, they are poor by choice.

Cut off their welfare.

Eliminate programs and fire state workers.

No more taxes!

The welfare safety net, as currently arranged in CA, is a time bomb under current economic conditions. The qualifying income levels are very high and easy to meet for anyone with kids.

The proportion of those who now, or soon will, qualify will exceed vitually any tax level on those remaining income earners.

For years California’s Demo dominated legislature has
been running businesses out of the state in droves
with higher and higher taxes and increased regulations.
Well, now we’re in a bind and what is their remedy?
Increase taxes on everybody, of course.

I hear people lament the idea of cutting education
funding until I tell them that 50 cents of every
state tax dollar goes to K thru college. We’re
being ripped off big time and there’s more to
come.

I should note that George Skelton is an apologist for the massive welfare state.
