Intruder fatally shot during struggle with resident
Fayetteville Observer ^ | 19 January, 2009 | NA

A Tokay Drive resident fatally shot a man who broke into his house Saturday night, police said Sunday.

The names of the resident and the victim were not immediately available.

The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. at 593 Tokay Drive, according to a Fayetteville police news release.

The resident entered his house and found the intruder inside, the release said.

The resident pulled out a pistol he was carrying and began struggling with the intruder, the release said.

The gun fired during the struggle, and the intruder ran out of the house, the release said.

It was not known how many shots were fired, a police spokesman said Sunday.

A short time later, a man with a gunshot wound was brought to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The man, believed to be the intruder, apparently called friends for help instead of dialing 911, the police spokesman said.

“His friends determined that he needed medical assistance and transported him to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center,” the spokesman said.

It’s a good thing that he died or he might have disagreed with the homeowners story and caused serious legal problems.

“resident” <—— no, citizen.

“Victim” <—— no, perp. The “resident” is the victim. Get the story right, guys.

IF criminals can read at all, they apparently don’t believe what they read.
So be it. The deader, the better.

AWESOME piece!

The writer observed that Pratt’s funeral service was attended by a large family, so I assume (perhaps erroneously) that the service itself was covered by local TV news outlets.

Wouldn’t it be a heaping pile of scorn to have read this editorial upon the last segmment of the funeral coverage? The offended reaction from the mourners would virtually ensure wider dissemmination of the editorial itself to the thief community - a public service announcement, if you will.

That is a great article. A local article, obviously, but a great article.

Thanks for the ping, Dave! I coulda swore this was the incident where the thief managed to wrest the gun out of the homeowner’s hand between getting shot and running off to flop dead. It is.

Today I was shocked when I saw on the news a bank being robbed in NC. But when I found out it was a 19 year old KID, that in the end was shot and killed my heart sank. All I could think of was ‘he’s just a child; his life hasn’t even begun; what went wrong in his life’. It reminded me of my childhood FRIEND Joshua Caleb Pratt. You don’t get a name like that without being raised in a church and having a loving family. Unfortunately for this family their mother died when the older children were in high school and the father had to work constanly to support them. Unfortunately even though we grew up in a nice neighborhood we went to a school that had some unsavory characters. It’s so easy to fall through the cracks now adays.

What Josh did was WRONG but that doesnt negate the fact that he was a sweet, intelligent man that I knew half of my life and he made a bad choice that cost him his life. Most of the people on these forums dont think about or care to know both sides of the story. It’s sad to me that my childhood friend did what he did. But it’s even sadder that people are so cold, even to someone who has paid the ultimate price for their sins.

FYI: I am a veteran who chose to be a corpsman because I wanted to save lives and I choose to leave my life in Gods hands.
