"There is such excitement in this town, with millions coming in," gushed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was accepting an arts award Monday from the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
"All these people coming in to see me get this award, it makes me ecstatic," the governor joked to the mayors at the Capitol Hilton, with inaugural crowds filling the streets outside.
Schwarzenegger was given the award for public leadership in the arts because of his support for art and music programs in the schools programs that face cuts because of the state's budget crisis.
The governor talked about the painting, sculpting and acting training he received in school growing up in Austria, which helped him as a bodybuilder and actor.
He also gave credit to two arts supporters in the luncheon crowd: Eli Broad, financier and philanthropist, and Malissa Shriver, the governor's sister-in-law and a member of the California Arts Council.
DON'T MESS WITH THE MAGIC DRAGON
Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame was in a mellow mood at the California Democrats' big bash at the Air and Space Museum, praising Barack Obama and recalling how he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
That was until someone mentioned a controversial song parody, "Barack the Magic Negro" sung to the tune of the trio's "Puff the Magic Dragon" that a prominent Republican, Chip Saltsman, included in a CD.
Saltsman is running for chair of the Republican National Committee, and Rush Limbaugh played the song on his radio show.
"That was venal and disgusting, although I will defend their right to be as venal and disgusting as they want to be in this so-called parody," said Yarrow, 70, at the Sunday night party.
