BOSTON — A federal agency said Friday that the nation’s first offshore wind farm, proposed for the waters off Cape Cod, posed no serious environmental threat, bringing it a major step closer to fruition.
Homeowners and boaters on the cape, including Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, have fought the project for eight years, saying it would hurt wildlife, fishing and tourism and spoil the beauty of Nantucket Sound.
Opponents have sued to stop the project, known as Cape Wind, and more challenges are certain, keeping the path to construction bumpy despite what supporters on Friday called a crucial victory.

Ted fought this for years, I hope they name it after him.
Just like a hypocritical Kennedy. Their motto: “We will not the problems of the masses.”
May he live long enough to see those beautiful blades turning.
I sort of hope it’s posthumous.
I hope Ted’s final days are spent cursing over these things.
When they are in corn fields, by the many hundreds as they are in parts of the Midwest, they are one heck of an ominous eyesore.
And they have those flashing red lights you see on radio and television towers, which means you are looking at 400-500 red lights blinking through the night.
Kind of reminds one of the Seinfeld episode in which the Kenny Roger’s Roasters sign made Kramer go crazy.
I sort of do too. He fought this for years. Do it but "not in my playground" was his attitude.
Prayers for Ted and may God forgive his sins because I won't.
I agree. I am sick and tired of seeing them by the hundreds also.
From someone who lives on the Cape, the only reason I would support this fiasco is because it will ruin his view. But I’m on Teddy’s side on this. It is the ruination of a pristine coastline that we rely on for income, when all else is ruined on land by grandiose ideas gone wrong, like Teddy’s free social programs that have turned Hyannis (and much of this country) into a slum, they turn to the water. Cape Cod survived on its natural beauty to attract income, now this will scar it forever.
I’m guessing that if Californians in Long Beach can suffer a few oil rigs offshore, Massaputins can suffer a few windmills! Tho’ clearly oil rigs are much more valuable. But it will also serve to remind all in massachussetts that see the blow turbines of their Blowhards in the Senate.
And here I thought wind power was a major solution, and yet it is impossible to build any.
I doubt that the wind farm will hurt tourism in Cape Cod. I do not like the appearance of wind farms but a wind farm would not stop me from vacationing on the Cape. Wind farms are often forced on rural areas. What is wrong with a wind farm for the elite?
I would rather see this project debated on economic grounds. Some have indicated that this project will double electric rates on the Cape and surrounding communities. For the left, increased electric rates are desired so this project looks like a winner for the enviro cheer leaders.
I used to enjoy visiting the Cape, but I won’t be back again because of these eyesores. The Jersey Shore coastline is being ruined also.
