President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to issue an executive order his first week in office -- and perhaps his first day -- to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, according to two presidential transition team advisers.
It's unlikely the detention facility at the Navy base in Cuba will be closed anytime soon. In an interview last weekend, Obama said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration.
But the order, which one adviser said could be issued as early as Jan. 20, would start the process of deciding what to do with the estimated 250 Al Qaeda and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses who are being held there. Most have not been charged with a crime.

July 14, 2011 was, of course, the most tragic day in the history of the United States of America.
The crowd was excited on that hot, muggy day at Wrigley Field. The greatest baseball players in the world were about to perform for the 82nd All Star game.
Fidel Castro, if he were still alive, would certainly argue about calling these the best baseball players. But, with negotiations under way to have an American League team in Havana, those Cubans would have their chance soon enough. And they wouldn’t even need to worry about their families being killed by the communist dictator. His reign of terror had been gone for two years. Freedom broke out in Cuba.
Unknown to the crowd and the American people, while they were enjoying their hot dogs and beer, an enormous number of dedicated agents were frantically scrambling to find the nuclear device.
President Barack Obama kept his promise and shut down Guantanamo within six months of his inauguration. Unfortunately, in the civilian trials that were to follow, Abdul Qabiz was not convicted. Two Muslims on the jury in New York, despite being presented with compelling evidence that Qabiz had tortured and killed two Americans in Afghanistan, refused to convict him.
Qabiz went home a hero to his fellow terrorists and wasted little time in extracting his revenge on America.
Disguised as a Mexican laborer, he came across the border with the device that had been secretly shipped from North Korea to Iran and then to Mexico. It was easy enough to do. Amnesty had passed the Democratic congress and was quickly signed into law. Qabiz came across with a group of Mexican laborers without a challenge.
Relative to modern ICBMS, the yield was not large, about half of what fell from the Enola Gay on the day that changed the world forever and ended World War II. But it was enough to instantly incinerate 50,000 Americans and lead to tens of thousands of deaths from radiation poisoning and cancer. Economic collapse and martial law immediately followed.
The device was timed to detonate right after the ceremonial first pitch. At 1:10pm, those souls who were lucky enough to score a ticket to the All Star Game, turned out to not be so lucky after all.
When the public address announcer introduced her, the Chicago crowd went wild. Striding out to the mound to throw out the first pitch was the First Lady of the United States followed by her two daughters.

RENDITION!!!!
Send ‘em to Shin Bet.
Last I checked, the bank account was a tad light.
Excuse me, but not all Americans did! My family that voted and a lot of other people didn’t either. Why should all the Americans that didn’t vote for him be punished for this? There were a number of people: most Republicans, third party (not communist), and even some Dems. who voted for McCain/Palin and others!
But we still got him didn’t we? Now what do you suggest we do?
As to the Gitmo PW’s...
They’ll let em go, same thing every socialist rat era, we’ll have to kill em later..........again ! Only after great loss of life in the CONUS and OS.
Rats will finger point and blame others . Stupid sheeple will vote em in again and again till they aren’t allowed to vote at all !
Wow, I feel safer already.
And when those you release and return to fighting like other that have been released, Bama, it will be your fault and you and the other demons will not be able to hang this on Bush!
beautifully written, very visual. If anything like that should ever happen, that's how it should be.
And their little dog too??
Scary, Doug!! Sounds like a twilight zone episode...but wait, we’re actually LIVING in one right now, aren’t we?!
(see my tagline!)
Feed em a friggin bullet and throw them into the nearest gd bay!
What's to decide?
Or alternatively, bring them to the mainland US so that when they're released, they can blend into the general population and continue their depredations closer to the targets.
That’s a Connecticut thing. The first time I saw that sign on the Merritt, 20 years ago, I nearly swerved off the road. In any other State, you would be heading for a fall off the overpass.
Most have not been charged with a crime.?!?!?!?!?
What happened? Did the military just randomly pick up 250 innocent men playing mumblypeg and send them to Gitmo?
Not charged with a crime?
They were combatants fercryinoutloud!
Think that fact will stop zer0? He'll just fire up the press and print what he needs for all his programs.
I’m fine with that plan if he gets our people out of there and orders carpet bombing until there’s nothing but dust left. Course, that won’t happen.
This guy will NOT be centrist.
Obama refused to commit to closing facility during his first 100 days in office. Instead, his comments suggest a more drawn out process of winding down operations. And rather than portraying the facility as a complete failure, he suggests that that the interrogations at Guantanamo Bay, lawful or otherwise, may have actually helped the United States identify and secure terrorists.
With Obama in office I wouldn’t be surprised if Lichtenstein invaded us and Obama surrendered.
The US died when he was elected, I’m waiting for the funeral and reading of the will.
Has the annointed one ever even been to Gitmo?
